Chapter 2: The Facade

Chapter 2: The Facade
The evening air was biting, a stark contrast to the suffocating warmth of the restaurant. Our SUV sat beneath a flickering halogen light in the parking lot. An American flag decal hung inside Bellissimo’s tinted front window, projecting an image of quiet, ordinary life. Nothing about the building suggested two innocent children had just been banished from their own grandfather's milestone celebration.
Lucas climbed into the back seat without a word, still gripping the blue birdhouse like a protective shield.
"Mom... why are we leaving Grandpa's party?" Mia asked, her voice trembling as she buckled her seatbelt.
I swallowed the heavy knot in my throat. Children deserve their innocence for as long as possible. "It's just an adults-only dinner tonight, sweetheart," I lied, forcing a gentle smile.
She nodded and accepted it. She was only seven.

Lucas wasn't convinced. He stared out the window into the dark asphalt before whispering, "But Aunt Diane said we were irritating."
That sentence hit harder than anything Diane had ever said to me. An entire roomful of adults had just taught my children that their presence was an inconvenience. My grip on the steering wheel tightened until my knuckles turned stark white. I threw the SUV into drive and peeled out of the lot. I wasn't just removing them from a toxic environment; I was taking back our night. We were going straight to Chuck E. Cheese.
