Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Choice
Vanessa did not sleep that night.
She watched the video of herself over and over.
Each replay sounded worse.
She heard Noah’s polite voice.
She saw Ellie staring at the bread.
She watched herself point toward the door.
People online called her heartless.
Cruel.
A monster.
Vanessa wanted to defend herself.
She wanted to explain that Claire had repeatedly warned employees about “people who came in looking for sympathy.”
She wanted to explain that two months earlier she had given a homeless man a muffin scheduled for disposal.
Claire had written her up.
“You are not running a charity.”
That was what Claire had said.
Vanessa had needed the job.
Her husband had left the previous year.
She had a four-year-old son.
She was behind on rent.
So when Noah and Ellie entered, Vanessa had chosen fear over kindness.
But the choice had still been hers.
The next morning, Richard asked her to meet him.
Claire was already in the office.
Vanessa sat down.
Richard folded his hands.
“I need you to tell me exactly what happened.”
Vanessa looked at Claire.
Claire’s expression warned her.
Vanessa looked back at Richard.
“They asked for day-old bread.”
“Why did you refuse?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Company policy.”
Claire immediately interrupted.
“That is false.”
Vanessa turned.
“You told us—”
“I told employees to use good judgment.”
Vanessa stared at her.
Richard leaned forward.
“What did she tell you?”
Vanessa swallowed.
Claire’s eyes remained fixed on her.
Vanessa suddenly remembered Noah gathering his coins.
She remembered Ellie saying, “We can pay.”
And she realized something.
If she stayed silent now, she would be doing the same thing again.
Choosing what was easy.
“She told us not to encourage poor people to come inside.”
Claire stood.
“That is a lie.”
Vanessa continued.
“She said they made premium customers uncomfortable.”
Richard’s face changed.
Claire pointed at Vanessa.
“She’s trying to save her job.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“I know I may lose my job.”
