Chapter 17 - The Truth Comes Back

Police found Claire at a motel outside Albany.

She did not resist.

By then, Daniel had explained everything.

Claire had been deeply in debt thirteen years earlier.

She owed nearly thirty thousand dollars from gambling and personal loans.

Daniel had discovered accounting irregularities.

Instead of reporting them, he had agreed to help her steal from the bakery in exchange for half the cash.

Grace became the perfect target.

She had recently been promoted.

She had office access.

And she had stayed late the evening before.

Claire used Daniel’s key to enter after hours.

She removed the money.

She placed part of it in Grace’s locker.

Then she allowed suspicion to do the rest.

The theft charge was never prosecuted.

But Grace’s employment record had carried the accusation for years.

Richard sat across from Grace at her apartment table.

“I contacted every background-check service we used.”

“I contacted every employer who may have received the old report.”

“We’re issuing a formal correction.”

Grace listened quietly.

Richard continued.

“The company also owes you compensation.”

Grace’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m not signing anything today.”

“You shouldn’t.”

Richard slid a folder toward her.

“Have an attorney review everything.”

“There’s something else.”

Grace waited.

“The Honey-Oat Morning Bread.”

Richard looked ashamed.

“You created it.”

“Yes.”

“We’ve sold it for thirteen years.”

“Yes.”

“You never signed over the recipe.”

Grace stared at him.

“No.”

Richard nodded.

“Then we owe you royalties.”

The room became silent.

Noah stopped doing his homework.

Ellie looked up from her coloring book.

Grace leaned back.

“How much?”

“We’re still calculating.”

“Estimate.”

Richard hesitated.

“With interest?”

“Yes.”

“Possibly several hundred thousand dollars.”

Noah’s pencil fell from his hand.

Grace did not move.

Richard continued.

“We also want to discuss future licensing.”

Grace finally spoke.

“You sold my bread while people called me a thief.”

Richard lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“And now you want my permission?”

“Yes.”

Grace looked at the folder.

Then she pushed it back.

“I need time.”

Richard nodded.

“Take all of it you need.”

For the first time thirteen years ago, someone from Bellmont Bakery did not demand that Grace accept their version of events.

They waited for hers.
