Chapter 18 - One More Loaf

Grace’s first baking class filled within two hours.

Twenty-four people came.

Single parents.

Teenagers.

Retirees.

Three children from Noah’s school.

Vanessa came too.

She sat quietly in the back.

Grace noticed her immediately.

Vanessa did not approach.

She respected Margaret’s warning.

The class began with bread.

Grace placed flour into a large steel bowl.

“Bread is patient.”

She looked around the room.

“You can’t rush it just because you’re hungry.”

“You mix.”

“You knead.”

“You wait.”

“You trust that something is happening even when you can’t see it.”

Noah watched his mother.

He had not seen her look this alive in years.

At the end of class, everyone carried home a loaf.

Vanessa remained behind.

Grace wiped flour from the counter.

“You’ve been waiting.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I wanted to apologize.”

Grace continued cleaning.

Vanessa spoke carefully.

“What I did to your children was cruel.”

“I knew the bread was there.”

“I knew they were trying to pay.”

“I was afraid of losing my job.”

“But I chose to protect myself by humiliating them.”

Grace finally looked at her.

Vanessa’s eyes were wet.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace remained silent.

Then she called toward the hallway.

“Noah.”

He entered.

Vanessa turned.

Her face reddened.

“I owe you an apology too.”

Noah looked at his mother.

Grace did not answer for him.

Vanessa lowered herself slightly so they were closer to eye level.

“You were polite to me.”

“I wasn’t polite to you.”

“You didn’t deserve that.”

Noah studied her.

“Would you do it again?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

“Even if your boss told you to?”

Vanessa paused.

Then she answered.

“No.”

Noah nodded.

“Okay.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

“Okay?”

“I believe you.”

That was all.

No dramatic embrace.

No instant friendship.

Just a second chance.

Before Vanessa left, Grace handed her a loaf.

Vanessa smiled.

“How much?”

Grace looked toward Noah.

He smiled slightly.

“Eighty-three cents.”

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

May you like

Then she placed a dollar in the jar.

“Keep the change.”
