Chapter 15 - What Kindness Costs
While Claire ran, another story was spreading through town.
Margaret Bellmont had returned to the bakery.
She placed a small wooden table near the entrance.
On it were twenty loaves of bread.
Beside them stood a handwritten sign.
TAKE WHAT YOU NEED.
LEAVE WHAT YOU CAN.
NO QUESTIONS.
Some customers praised the idea.
Others complained.
One man approached Margaret.
“You’ll attract homeless people.”
Margaret nodded.
“Hungry people, hopefully.”
“That’s bad for business.”
Margaret looked around the crowded bakery.
“Then perhaps we should decide what kind of business we want.”
The man left.
An hour later, an elderly customer put twenty dollars in the jar.
A college student left five.
A construction worker bought two loaves and paid for six.
By evening, the jar contained $318.
Vanessa stood watching.
Margaret handed her another basket.
“Fill it.”
Vanessa hesitated.
“You still trust me?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Should I?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s a good answer.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I was horrible to those kids.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid Claire would fire me.”
“I understand fear.”
“That doesn’t excuse it.”
“No.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I want to apologize.”
“To them?”
“Yes.”
Margaret considered it.
“An apology is for the person you hurt.”
“Not for the person who wants forgiveness.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“So if Noah and Ellie don’t want to hear it, you accept that.”
“I will.”
Margaret handed her the bread.
Vanessa placed each loaf carefully on the table.
At closing time, one remained.
A boy about fourteen entered.
He wore a school backpack.
He counted coins in his hand.
Vanessa watched him approach.
“How much is that bread?”
Vanessa looked at the coins.
Then she looked at the sign.
“Whatever you can afford.”
The boy placed fifty cents in the jar.
Vanessa handed him the loaf.
“Have a good night.”
He smiled.
“You too.”

And seventeen cents had never felt more expensive.
