Chapter 10: The Name She Buried

Chapter 10: The Name She Buried

Daniel Carter stared at the faded photocopy in disbelief.

VICTORIA ELAINE STONE.

Date of Birth.

Driver's license number.

An old address in Hartford, Connecticut.

A photograph of a woman with darker hair and softer features—but unmistakably the same person who had nearly become his wife.

For a long moment, Daniel couldn't speak.

He looked up at Harold Mercer.

"You're telling me Vanessa Blake never existed?"

Harold sighed.

"Not exactly."

"Victoria Stone existed first."

"The name Vanessa Blake came later."

Daniel slowly lowered the document onto the workbench.

"Why would someone change their identity?"

Harold looked away.

"There are legal reasons."

"There are personal reasons."

"And then..."

"There are people who are running from something."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"Which one was she?"

Harold hesitated.

"I never found out."

"But I suspected it wasn't voluntary."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Harold reached into another folder.

"There were people watching her, too."

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

Harold nodded.

"At first, I thought she was following your family."

"Then I realized..."

"...someone else was following her."

### Eight Years Earlier

Harold spread several surveillance photographs across the wooden workbench.

Each one showed Victoria Stone—years before she became Vanessa Blake.

In one picture, she was leaving a downtown café.

In another, she was entering a library.

A third showed her sitting alone on a park bench.

Daniel noticed something immediately.

The same black SUV appeared in the background of every photograph.

"Who's driving that vehicle?"

Harold shook his head.

"I never identified them."

"But they appeared every time Victoria appeared."

"So she was being watched."

"Constantly."

Daniel looked back at the photographs.

The story suddenly became far more complicated.

Was Victoria a predator...

Or was she someone else's pawn?

### Boston

At that exact moment, Vanessa sat inside her penthouse office.

The curtains were closed.

The television was muted.

Three laptops sat open on her desk.

One displayed financial reports.

Another showed news coverage of the canceled wedding.

The third contained a single encrypted file.

Marcus Hale entered without knocking.

"You've been busy."

Vanessa never looked up.

"Did Mercer talk?"

Marcus placed his wet coat over a chair.

"I couldn't get close enough."

"But Daniel reached him."

Vanessa finally met his eyes.

"What did Mercer give him?"

"I don't know."

"But Daniel left carrying several files."

Vanessa's expression darkened.

She slowly closed the laptop.

"I was afraid of this."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"Then tell me something."

"For two years I've done work for you."

"I've investigated people."

"Tracked assets."

"Recovered information."

"But there's one question you've never answered."

Vanessa remained silent.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Who are you really?"

The room fell quiet.

Finally, Vanessa stood and walked toward the rain-covered window.

She watched the city lights shimmer across Boston Harbor.

"My name..."

She paused.

"...used to be Victoria Stone."

Marcus waited.

"My father changed it when I was sixteen."

"Why?"

"Because someone killed my mother."

Marcus frowned.

"And?"

"They were never caught."

She closed her eyes.

"My father believed changing our identities would keep us alive."

Marcus studied her carefully.

"You've never told anyone that."

"I wasn't planning to."

### Vermont

Daniel sat across from Harold Mercer inside the farmhouse kitchen.

Fresh coffee steamed between them.

Rain tapped gently against the windows.

Harold looked exhausted.

"So..."

Daniel began.

"Why were you really investigating Victoria?"

Harold smiled sadly.

"Because Emily hired me."

Daniel frowned.

"I know."

"No."

Harold shook his head.

"You know why Emily hired me."

"You don't know what happened afterward."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happened?"

Harold took a slow breath.

"About three weeks into the investigation..."

"I finally confronted Victoria."

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

"You spoke to her?"

"Face-to-face."

"What did she say?"

Harold stared into his coffee.

"She cried."

Daniel blinked.

"Cried?"

Harold nodded.

"She told me she wasn't following Emily."

"She was following you."

Daniel frowned.

"That's not better."

"No."

"But then she said something strange."

Harold repeated the sentence exactly as he'd heard it years earlier.

> "If I stop watching him... they'll know I've failed."

Daniel felt a chill spread through his body.

"They?"

Harold nodded.

"I asked who she meant."

"What did she say?"

"Nothing."

"She became terrified."

"She ran."

### The Hidden Cassette

Harold slowly stood.

"My memory isn't what it used to be."

"But I kept something."

He walked into a small storage room and returned carrying an old cassette recorder.

Daniel looked surprised.

"You still have that?"

"I recorded our conversation."

Harold smiled faintly.

"Old investigators trusted tape more than memory."

He inserted the cassette.

The recorder clicked.

Static filled the room.

Then...

Voices.

A younger Harold Mercer.

A frightened young woman.

Daniel recognized the voice immediately.

Vanessa.

Or rather...

Victoria.

The recording crackled.

Harold's younger voice asked,

"Who are you working for?"

A long silence followed.

Then Victoria answered.

"I can't tell you."

"Why not?"

"Because they'll kill me."

Daniel's breathing stopped.

The tape continued.

"Who's they?"

Victoria began crying.

"Please..."

"Just leave him alone."

"He doesn't deserve what's coming."

Harold asked one final question.

"Then why keep following him?"

Victoria whispered something so quietly it was almost impossible to hear.

Harold increased the volume.

The words became clear.

"Because if I don't..."

"...they'll take my little sister."

The tape abruptly ended.

The room fell silent.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

Nothing about this fit the woman he had known.

The manipulative, calculating Vanessa Blake from the chapel...

Sounded nothing like the terrified young woman on the tape.

### Boston Police Headquarters

Across the city, Detective Sarah Mitchell sat in front of a computer reviewing an old cold-case database.

She had been assigned to investigate anonymous threats made against Daniel Carter after the canceled wedding.

A routine background search on Vanessa Blake had produced almost nothing.

Too little.

That alone made her suspicious.

She tried another search.

Victoria Elaine Stone.

The system froze for several seconds.

Then...

A red notification appeared across the screen.

RESTRICTED FILE

FEDERAL ACCESS REQUIRED

Sarah frowned.

Civilian identity changes rarely triggered federal restrictions.

She entered her detective credentials anyway.

ACCESS DENIED

Then another message appeared.

> This identity is associated with an active federal investigation. Contact the U.S. Marshals Service.

Sarah slowly leaned back in her chair.

"Who are you?"

she whispered.

### Vermont

Daniel carefully placed the cassette recorder back on the table.

He looked at Harold.

"Everything I thought I knew..."

"...is falling apart."

Harold nodded.

"I've been waiting eight years to tell someone."

Daniel picked up the folder.

"I need the complete file."

"It's yours."

As Daniel stood to leave, Harold suddenly grabbed his arm.

"There is one more thing."

Daniel turned.

"The people Victoria feared..."

"They eventually came looking for me."

Daniel's expression changed.

"When?"

"Two nights ago."

"What did they want?"

Harold's face turned pale.

"They weren't asking about Victoria anymore."

"They were asking about Lily."

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

"My daughter?"

Harold nodded.

"They knew her name."

"They knew her school."

"They even knew what she looked like."

A terrifying realization struck Daniel.

This had never been just about a wedding.

It had never been just about Vanessa.

Someone else...

Someone far more dangerous...

Had been watching his family all along.

And now...

May you like

They had turned their attention to Lily.
