Chapter 6: A Dangerous Obsession

Chapter 6: A Dangerous Obsession

Daniel Carter had always believed that the worst day of his life was the afternoon he buried his wife.

He was wrong.

Because grief was honest.

What he had experienced at the chapel was betrayal.

As he drove through downtown Boston, Lily sat quietly in the back seat, hugging the stuffed rabbit her mother had given her before she passed away.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It was healing.

Daniel glanced into the rearview mirror.

Lily was staring out the window.

"What are you thinking about, sweetheart?"

She looked at him.

"Are you sad?"

He smiled softly.

"A little."

"Because the wedding didn't happen?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Because I didn't realize how scared you've been."

Lily lowered her eyes.

"I didn't want you to be lonely."

His heart broke all over again.

"Oh, sweetheart..."

He pulled the car into a quiet park overlooking the Charles River.

The afternoon breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass.

Families walked nearby.

Children chased pigeons across the sidewalks.

Life went on, unaware that Daniel's world had just changed forever.

He parked the car and climbed into the back seat beside Lily.

Taking her small hands in his, he looked directly into her eyes.

"I need you to promise me something."

"What?"

"If anyone ever says something that makes you feel scared, unwanted, or confused..."

"You tell me."

"Immediately."

She hesitated.

"Even if they tell me not to?"

"Especially then."

Lily nodded.

"I promise."

Daniel wrapped her in a hug.

"And I promise you something."

"What?"

"No one will ever come between us again."

Lily buried her face against his chest.

"I know."

For the first time in months...

She truly believed him.

### Across Town

Vanessa Blake sat alone inside her penthouse overlooking Boston Harbor.

The wedding dress had been tossed carelessly across a leather sofa.

Her makeup was gone.

The carefully crafted image of the perfect bride had disappeared.

Only the real Vanessa remained.

She poured another glass of wine.

The television was already covering the story.

"Billionaire CEO Calls Off Wedding Moments Before Ceremony."

The headline flashed repeatedly.

Clips of stunned guests leaving the chapel played on every channel.

Social media had exploded.

Some praised Daniel.

Others criticized him for humiliating Vanessa publicly.

But almost everyone was asking the same question.

What really happened?

Vanessa muted the television.

She wasn't interested in public opinion.

She was interested in control.

Her phone buzzed.

Marcus Hale.

She answered immediately.

"Talk."

"I've reviewed the file."

"What file?"

"The one I kept after you hired me three years ago."

Vanessa walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"And?"

Marcus spoke calmly.

"You originally hired me to investigate Emily Carter."

Vanessa remained silent.

"You wanted to know whether her cancer treatments were affecting Daniel's business decisions."

"I remember."

"I also found something else."

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her wineglass.

"What?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I never included it in my final report."

"Why not?"

"Because you told me it wasn't relevant."

Vanessa frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"There was a sealed trust."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"A trust?"

"Created six months before Emily died."

Vanessa slowly turned away from the window.

"Who are the beneficiaries?"

Marcus answered with two names.

"Daniel Carter."

"And Lily Carter."

Vanessa frowned.

"That's obvious."

Marcus continued.

"There are conditions."

"What kind of conditions?"

"If Daniel remarries..."

"...the structure of the trust changes."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"What changes?"

"I don't know."

"The details are confidential."

"But the trust is worth considerably more than the public realizes."

Vanessa's mind immediately began racing.

She had spent nearly two years planning her future with Daniel.

Not once had he mentioned a trust.

Not once.

She whispered,

"Find out everything."

"It won't be easy."

"I didn't ask if it was easy."

Marcus sighed.

"I'll call you tomorrow."

### The Carter Estate

As the sun began to set, Daniel unlocked the front door.

The house felt strangely peaceful.

For months it had been filled with wedding planners, florists, decorators, and endless meetings.

Now...

It was simply home again.

Lily kicked off her tiny shoes.

"Can I change into pajamas?"

Daniel smiled.

"It's four in the afternoon."

"I know."

"But they're comfortable."

He laughed.

"Go ahead."

She ran upstairs.

Watching her disappear around the corner, Daniel finally allowed himself to breathe.

Then the doorbell rang.

He opened it to find Olivia Grant standing on the porch.

She looked exhausted.

In one hand she carried a leather planner.

In the other...

A folder.

"May I come in?"

Daniel immediately stepped aside.

"Of course."

They sat in the living room.

For a full minute neither of them spoke.

Finally Olivia slid the planner across the coffee table.

"I found this in Vanessa's bridal suite."

Daniel looked at it cautiously.

"What is it?"

"Read page thirty-two."

He opened the planner.

As his eyes moved across Vanessa's handwritten notes...

The color drained from his face.

Each sentence felt like another knife twisting deeper into his chest.

Encourage boarding school.

Remove Emily's photographs.

New household rules.

Lily must understand hierarchy.

Daniel stopped reading.

His hands were shaking.

"This..."

He struggled to finish the sentence.

"This can't be real."

Olivia quietly placed another sheet of paper beside the planner.

"I watched her write notes like these for months."

"You knew?"

"I knew she wanted control."

"I never imagined it had gone this far."

Daniel closed the planner.

He suddenly remembered something.

"Wait here."

He hurried upstairs.

A minute later he returned carrying a framed family photograph.

It showed Emily sitting beneath an oak tree, laughing while Lily rested in her lap.

Daniel stared at the picture.

Then at Vanessa's notes.

Remove Emily's photographs gradually.

His stomach turned.

"She wanted to erase my wife."

Olivia nodded sadly.

"And replace every memory with herself."

Daniel looked toward the staircase, making sure Lily couldn't hear.

Then he whispered,

"She never loved us."

Olivia answered honestly.

"I think she loved winning."

---

At that moment, Daniel's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

"This is Daniel Carter."

A calm female voice replied.

"Mr. Carter, my name is Laura Bennett."

"I'm the attorney representing the Carter Family Trust."

Daniel frowned.

"I wasn't expecting your call."

"I know."

"But after today's events..."

"...there's something your late wife instructed me to deliver if your engagement ever ended unexpectedly."

Daniel exchanged a confused glance with Olivia.

"What do you mean?"

"There is a sealed letter."

"A letter written by Emily."

Daniel's heart stopped.

"It has remained unopened for seven years."

"She instructed our firm to release it only under one specific circumstance."

Daniel's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"What circumstance?"

"If the woman you intended to marry ever proved to be a danger to Lily."

The room fell completely silent.

Olivia stared at Daniel in disbelief.

Daniel could barely breathe.

Emily...

Somehow...

Had anticipated this possibility years before she died.

Laura Bennett continued,

"Mr. Carter..."

May you like

"I think it's time you read your wife's final message."
