Chapter 14: The Traitor Inside

Chapter 14: The Traitor Inside
The Berkshire Safe House had never been compromised.
For nearly fifteen years, Safe House Twelve had protected federal witnesses, undercover agents, and their families without a single security breach.
Its location was classified.
Its staff were handpicked.
Its security systems were updated every forty-eight hours.
According to the FBI, it was one of the safest places in the country.
Someone had just proven them wrong.

### 5:42 A.M.
Special Agent Nathan Brooks was already awake when his secure phone vibrated.
The message came from the Cyber Division.
> WARNING: Unauthorized GPS signal detected inside convoy vehicle #2.
Nathan's heart skipped a beat.
Vehicle #2.
Daniel and Lily.
He immediately rushed outside.
Technicians were already surrounding the black SUV with electronic scanners.
Melissa Grant looked up as Nathan approached.
"We found it."
She pointed beneath the rear bumper.
A tiny magnetic device no larger than a matchbox blinked with a faint green light.
Nathan frowned.
"When was it attached?"
Melissa carefully removed it.
"Less than twenty-four hours ago."
Daniel, who had followed Nathan outside, felt his stomach tighten.
"So they know we're here."
Melissa hesitated.
"I'm afraid it's worse than that."
She connected the tracker to a forensic tablet.
Within seconds, encrypted data appeared on the screen.
Nathan stared at it.
"What is this?"
Melissa's expression changed.
"This tracker..."
"...is transmitting through an FBI satellite network."
Silence.
Daniel looked from Melissa to Nathan.
"What does that mean?"
Nathan answered quietly.
"It means whoever planted this device had access to federal systems."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"You have a mole."
Nathan didn't deny it.
---
### The Emergency Meeting
Within minutes, every agent assigned to Safe House Twelve gathered in the command center.
The atmosphere was tense.
Nathan stood before a digital map of the compound.
"We have confirmation of an internal breach."
No one spoke.
"We don't know whether the compromise happened in Boston..."
"...or after the convoy left."
Melissa projected another image onto the screen.
"The tracker was activated at exactly 11:17 p.m."
Nathan frowned.
"That's after we arrived."
A low murmur spread through the room.
Someone had entered the secure parking area during the night.
Only authorized personnel had access.
Nathan slowly looked around the room.
"There are twenty-three agents assigned to this facility."
"No one leaves until we know who's responsible."
---
### Daniel's Cabin
Meanwhile, Lily was making pancakes with one of the facility's cooks.
For the first time in days, she looked genuinely happy.
Flour covered the tip of her nose.
She giggled as she accidentally flipped a pancake onto the floor.
Daniel couldn't help smiling.
"You know..."
"I think Bunny is a better cook."
Lily laughed.
"Bunny doesn't have hands."
"That's never stopped him before."
She picked up her stuffed rabbit and pretended it was stirring batter.
The cook smiled warmly.
Watching Daniel with his daughter made it almost impossible to believe anyone would want to hurt this family.

### The Interrogation
Nathan entered the temporary holding room where Vanessa sat alone.
She looked exhausted.
He placed the GPS tracker on the table.
"Recognize it?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"This signal came from an FBI network."
Vanessa looked genuinely surprised.
"What?"
Nathan watched her carefully.
"You seem shocked."
"Because I am."
He leaned closer.
"Victoria..."
"If someone inside the Bureau is helping them..."
"...who would they be helping?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Then slowly whispered,
"The Judge."
Nathan's expression didn't change.
"Tell me about him."
"I don't know his name."
"What do you know?"
She swallowed.
"Only that he always had friends."
"Everywhere."
"In banks."
"In police departments."
"In courts."
"And..."
She looked directly at Nathan.
"...inside the FBI."
---
### Security Review
Melissa spent the next two hours reviewing surveillance footage from the compound.
Every hallway.
Every gate.
Every parking lot.
Finally...
She stopped the recording.
"There."
Nathan stepped beside her.
A figure in an FBI tactical uniform entered the parking garage at 11:14 p.m.
Face hidden beneath a cap.
Walking confidently.
The person approached Daniel's SUV.
Knelt beside the rear bumper.
Then disappeared three minutes later.
Nathan zoomed in.
The security badge wasn't visible.
The camera angle hid the name.
Melissa frowned.
"They knew exactly where the blind spots were."
Nathan crossed his arms.
"This wasn't random."
"It was practiced."
---
### The Missing File
At noon, another problem emerged.
A classified file had disappeared.
Agent Collins stormed into the operations room.
"What file?"
Melissa looked uneasy.
"The Victoria Stone archive."
Nathan froze.
"What?"
"The entire digital case file was accessed."
"And then deleted."
Nathan immediately checked the secure server.
Empty.
Years of evidence.
Gone.
Daniel looked toward Vanessa through the observation window.
Someone was trying to erase her history.
Again.
---
### Lily's Discovery
That afternoon, Lily wandered into the safe house library.
The room was small but cozy.
Shelves of old books lined the walls.
As she searched for a children's story, something shiny caught her eye beneath a chair.
She bent down.
It was a silver coin.
Strange symbols were engraved on one side.
A raven.
A scale.
And the Roman numeral XIII.
She picked it up.
"Daddy?"
Daniel looked over.
"What did you find?"
She handed him the coin.
"I thought somebody dropped it."
Daniel frowned.
He'd never seen anything like it.
Nathan walked over.
The moment he saw the coin...
His face lost all color.
"Where did you get this?"
Lily pointed toward the reading chair.
"It was on the floor."
Nathan carefully picked it up using a handkerchief.
His voice became almost a whisper.
"No..."
Daniel looked at him.
"What is it?"
Nathan stared at the engraving.
"This isn't a coin."
"What is it?"
"A Dominion marker."
Daniel frowned.
"A what?"
Nathan looked around the room.
"When Dominion members complete an operation..."
"...they sometimes leave one behind."
Daniel felt a chill spread through his body.
"They've been inside the safe house."
Nathan slowly nodded.
"And recently."
---
### The Alarm
Before anyone could say another word...
A loud siren echoed throughout the compound.
Red emergency lights flashed across every hallway.
An automated voice filled the building.
"Security Breach."
"Security Breach."
"All personnel report to defensive positions immediately."
Nathan grabbed his radio.
"Report!"
A frantic voice answered.
"Perimeter Fence Three has been cut!"
Another voice interrupted.
"Unknown vehicle approaching from the north road!"
A third transmission followed almost instantly.
"We've lost camera feeds on the eastern sector!"
Daniel instinctively picked up Lily.
She buried her face against his shoulder.
"Daddy..."
"What's happening?"
He held her tightly.
"Nothing's going to happen to you."
Nathan drew his sidearm.
His expression turned deadly serious.
"They're here."
---
### Outside the Compound
Nearly a mile away, hidden among dense pine trees, six black SUVs came to a stop.
Men wearing night-vision goggles stepped out silently.
Each carried military-grade equipment.
One of them looked through a sniper scope toward the safe house.
"The target has entered lockdown."
Another man adjusted an encrypted radio.
A calm voice spoke through the speaker.
"Remember your orders."
"No unnecessary casualties."
The sniper asked,
"What about Victoria Stone?"
The answer came without hesitation.
"Bring her back alive."
"And the child?"
The voice paused for several seconds.
Then replied,
"If the father refuses to cooperate..."
"...take Lily Carter."
The radio went silent.
The sniper chambered a round.
Far below, the emergency lights of Safe House Twelve continued flashing through the darkness.

The siege had begun.
