Chapter 13: The Safe House

Chapter 13: The Safe House

The FBI moved quickly.

Within thirty minutes of confirming the murders in Connecticut, the entire Boston Police Headquarters was placed on heightened security.

Uniformed officers blocked every entrance.

Federal agents swept the building floor by floor.

No one entered.

No one left.

Daniel sat silently in the conference room, watching through the glass as Vanessa remained inside the interrogation room.

She hadn't stopped crying.

The news of her father's murder had shattered whatever emotional walls she still had.

Special Agent Nathan Brooks walked in carrying a thick classified folder.

He placed it on the table.

"Mr. Carter."

Daniel looked up.

Nathan extended his hand.

"I'm Special Agent Nathan Brooks."

Daniel shook it.

"I understand you've had a difficult twenty-four hours."

"That's an understatement."

Nathan nodded.

"I've reviewed everything."

"The canceled wedding."

"The surveillance photographs."

"The threats against Lily."

"And Victoria Stone."

Daniel frowned.

"You keep calling her Victoria."

Nathan met his eyes.

"Because that's the identity she had when we first met her."

"You knew her?"

Nathan slowly sat down.

"I've known about her for almost twenty years."

Daniel stared at him.

"What exactly is going on?"

Nathan opened the classified folder.

"Everything begins with an organization called The Dominion Circle."

---

### Twenty Years Earlier

Nathan slid several photographs across the table.

The images showed powerful men leaving luxury hotels, private airfields, and exclusive charity galas.

"They don't exist on paper," Nathan explained.

"They don't have an official headquarters."

"They don't have membership lists."

"But for decades they've infiltrated legitimate businesses, charities, and investment firms."

Daniel studied the photographs.

"What do they actually do?"

Nathan answered without hesitation.

"They buy people."

"When they can't buy them..."

"They destroy them."

Daniel remembered what Vanessa had said.

"They wanted leverage."

Nathan continued.

"Victoria's father discovered that one of their financial networks was laundering billions of dollars through nonprofit organizations."

"He agreed to testify."

"So they murdered his wife."

Daniel lowered his head.

"And put the family into Witness Protection."

Nathan nodded.

"They survived."

"But the organization never stopped looking."

---

### The Carter Connection

Daniel frowned.

"What does any of that have to do with me?"

Nathan opened another file.

"Your company."

"Carter Technologies."

Daniel nodded.

"What about it?"

"Eight years ago..."

"They believed your encryption software could compromise several of their financial operations."

Daniel blinked.

"That's impossible."

"We were building hospital security systems."

"They didn't know that."

Nathan leaned forward.

"They assumed your company had military contracts."

Daniel sighed.

"So they watched me."

"For years."

Nathan nodded.

"They assigned someone to get close."

"Victoria."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Everything Harold Mercer had discovered was beginning to fit together.

Almost.

"There are still gaps."

Nathan agreed.

"There are."

---

### Across the Hall

Sarah Mitchell entered the interrogation room carrying a bottle of water.

Vanessa looked emotionally exhausted.

Sarah sat across from her.

"I need names."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know most of them."

"What about the people who contacted you?"

"I only knew them by code names."

Sarah frowned.

"Such as?"

Vanessa whispered,

"Director."

"Falcon."

"Gray."

"And..."

She hesitated.

Sarah waited.

"The Judge."

Sarah immediately wrote the names down.

"Which one gave you orders?"

Vanessa's face paled.

"The Judge."

"What does he look like?"

"I've never seen him."

"You never met him?"

"No."

"Only phone calls."

Sarah found that difficult to believe.

"You worked for years without meeting your employer?"

Vanessa looked at her.

"You don't meet people like him."

"They decide whether you keep breathing."

---

### Carter Estate

At the same time, dozens of FBI agents searched Daniel's home.

Every room.

Every computer.

Every security system.

Agent Melissa Grant, the bureau's cybercrime specialist, called Nathan.

"We found something."

Nathan placed the call on speaker.

"What is it?"

"Someone installed remote-access software on the estate's network."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"When?"

Melissa typed rapidly.

"Approximately eleven months ago."

Daniel's heart sank.

Eleven months.

Exactly when Vanessa had begun helping him renovate the estate.

Nathan asked,

"Could she have done it?"

Melissa hesitated.

"The installation required physical access."

Daniel looked away.

Vanessa had practically lived in the house.

She could have installed anything.

Nathan asked another question.

"Has it been active recently?"

Melissa didn't answer immediately.

Then...

"Yes."

"Someone accessed the cameras yesterday."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"They watched Lily."

Melissa's next sentence chilled everyone.

"No."

"They did more than watch."

"They downloaded the blueprints of the entire estate."

### The Safe House

By evening, the FBI insisted Daniel and Lily leave their home.

"It's only temporary," Nathan assured him.

"We don't know who we're dealing with."

Daniel looked at Lily, who was hugging her stuffed rabbit.

"Will we come back?"

Nathan smiled kindly.

"As soon as it's safe."

Lily looked at Daniel.

"Are we going on an adventure?"

Daniel forced a smile.

"I guess we are."

She brightened.

"Can Bunny come?"

Nathan laughed softly.

"Bunny is absolutely invited."

For a brief moment, everyone in the room smiled.

Children had an extraordinary ability to create light even in the darkest moments.

### The Convoy

Three black SUVs left Boston just after sunset.

The first carried tactical agents.

The second carried Daniel and Lily.

The third transported Vanessa under heavy guard.

None of them knew their destination.

Only Nathan did.

The convoy headed west.

Far away from the city.

Far away from anyone who might be watching.

Or so they believed.

---

### Twenty Miles Behind

A dark gray pickup truck maintained a careful distance.

Its headlights remained off whenever possible.

Inside sat two men.

One adjusted a long-range camera.

"The convoy just left Interstate 90."

The driver nodded.

"They're following protocol."

A secure radio crackled.

A distorted voice asked,

"Do you have visual confirmation?"

"Yes."

"What about the girl?"

The passenger zoomed in through the camera.

"Lily Carter is inside the middle vehicle."

The voice on the radio remained silent for several seconds.

Then it spoke.

"Do not engage."

"Repeat."

"Do not engage."

"We're not ready."

The passenger frowned.

"Then why are we following them?"

The answer came immediately.

"Because the child isn't the objective anymore."

The passenger exchanged a confused glance with the driver.

"Then who is?"

The voice replied with chilling certainty.

"Victoria Stone."

---

### The Mountain Safe House

Just before midnight, the convoy arrived at a secluded government facility hidden deep within the Berkshire Mountains.

Tall pine trees surrounded the compound.

High fences topped with cameras stretched around the property.

Armed federal agents patrolled every entrance.

Nathan turned to Daniel.

"Welcome to Safe House Twelve."

Daniel looked around.

"It looks like a military base."

"It practically is."

As Lily stepped out of the SUV, she looked up at the stars.

"There are so many."

Daniel smiled softly.

"You can't see stars like that in Boston."

She nodded.

"I think Mommy can."

Daniel wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"I think you're right."

For one fleeting moment...

It felt like they had finally escaped.

None of them noticed the tiny blinking red light hidden beneath the rear bumper of the second SUV.

A GPS tracking beacon.

Still transmitting.

Still active.

Still leading someone...

May you like

Straight to them.
