Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Bridal Suite

Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Bridal Suite

The applause followed Daniel and Lily all the way to the chapel doors.

Neither of them looked back.

The bright afternoon sun spilled across the stone steps outside, where dozens of guests who hadn't been invited into the sanctuary waited excitedly for the newlyweds to emerge.

Instead, they watched the groom walk out holding his daughter’s hand.

Alone.

Still wearing his tuxedo.

Without a bride.

Confused whispers immediately spread through the crowd.

"What happened?"

"Did they postpone the ceremony?"

"Where's Vanessa?"

Daniel ignored every question.

He knelt in front of Lily and brushed a loose curl away from her face.

"How about that ice cream?"

She managed a tiny smile.

"Chocolate?"

"You can have two scoops."

"Can I get sprinkles?"

He laughed softly.

"You can have all the sprinkles you want."

For the first time that day, Lily giggled.

The sound was quiet, but it was enough to remind Daniel why he had made the right decision.

Nothing—not a wedding, not public opinion, not embarrassment—could ever be worth sacrificing that little girl's sense of security.

As they reached the parking area, Michael hurried after them.

"Daniel!"

Daniel turned.

"You okay?"

Michael let out a breath.

"That's probably the dumbest question I've ever asked."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I've had better days."

Michael looked down at Lily.

"Hey, kiddo."

Lily offered a shy wave.

Michael reached into his pocket and produced a small wrapped chocolate.

"I was saving this for after the ceremony."

She accepted it with both hands.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

As Lily walked a few steps ahead toward the car, Michael lowered his voice.

"Do you want me to deal with the guests?"

Daniel nodded.

"Please."

"They're going to have questions."

"They can ask."

"And the media?"

Daniel glanced toward the street, where photographers had already begun gathering outside the chapel gates.

"They'll make up their own story no matter what I say."

Michael studied his friend's face.

"You don't regret it?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"Not for a second."

### Inside the Chapel

Chaos had replaced celebration.

Guests gathered in small groups, replaying every moment they had just witnessed.

Some defended Daniel.

Others questioned whether the confrontation should have happened in public.

Most simply couldn't believe what they had seen.

Near the altar, Vanessa remained perfectly still.

Her wedding dress looked immaculate.

Her pride did not.

The makeup artist approached cautiously.

"Vanessa..."

No response.

The wedding planner stepped forward.

"The reception venue is asking whether they should continue preparing dinner."

Vanessa slowly lifted her eyes.

"Cancel everything."

Her voice was emotionless.

The planner nodded and hurried away.

Vanessa's mother, Margaret Blake, stood several feet away, staring at her daughter.

"I don't even recognize you."

Vanessa didn't answer.

Her father looked equally heartbroken.

"You need to tell us the truth."

Vanessa finally looked at him.

"I already did."

"No."

Richard Blake shook his head.

"You admitted enough to reveal your heart."

"But not enough to explain it."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"I loved Daniel."

Margaret replied quietly,

"If that's what love looked like..."

"I hope I never see hatred."

### The Bridal Suite

Olivia Grant quietly slipped away from the chapel.

She needed a moment to think.

The bridal suite on the second floor was empty.

White roses still decorated every table.

Champagne glasses remained untouched.

The room looked frozen in time, as though the wedding had never happened.

Olivia sighed.

She began gathering Vanessa's belongings into garment bags.

Halfway through packing, something caught her attention.

A leather planner sat partially hidden beneath the makeup case.

It wasn't unusual.

Vanessa organized everything.

Schedules.

Appointments.

Shopping lists.

Business meetings.

Olivia picked it up, intending to place it in the overnight bag.

Instead, a folded sheet of paper slipped onto the floor.

She bent down.

It wasn't blank.

Several handwritten notes covered the page.

At first, they seemed random.

Then one sentence made her blood run cold.

> Never let Lily think she comes first.

Olivia frowned.

She continued reading.

Another line.

> Daniel always chooses guilt over logic. Use that.

Her heartbeat quickened.

She flipped the page over.

There were more.

Much more.

A checklist.

* Gain Evelyn's trust.

* Encourage fewer father-daughter weekends.

* Suggest boarding school within two years.

* Redecorate the house.

* Remove Emily's photographs gradually.

* Establish new household rules.

Olivia felt sick.

Boarding school?

Remove Emily's photographs?

This wasn't frustration.

This was strategy.

Deliberate.

Calculated.

She kept reading.

Near the bottom of the page, one sentence had been circled twice.

> Marriage changes everything. Lily will eventually accept her place.

Olivia covered her mouth.

"Oh, my God..."

---

A quiet voice behind her said,

"I wondered when someone would find that."

Olivia spun around.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

She had removed her veil.

Her expression was unreadable.

Olivia instinctively stepped backward.

"What is this?"

Vanessa closed the door behind her.

"My private notes."

"You planned all this?"

Vanessa shrugged.

"I planned a family."

"No."

Olivia held up the paper.

"You planned to erase a child."

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

"Don't be dramatic."

"Boarding school?"

"Many wealthy families send their children away."

"She's seven."

"Not forever."

Olivia stared at her.

"I've known you for fifteen years."

"I don't know this person."

Vanessa crossed the room calmly.

"You know exactly who I am."

"No."

"I knew the woman who volunteered at children's hospitals."

"The woman who donated toys every Christmas."

"The woman who cried watching adoption commercials."

Vanessa laughed.

"Image matters."

The words echoed through the room.

Olivia couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"So all of that..."

"...was an act?"

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she poured herself a glass of champagne.

Then she smiled.

"You don't become successful by letting emotions make decisions."

Olivia shook her head.

"You never loved Daniel."

Vanessa took a sip.

"I admired him."

"That's not the same."

"He was stable."

"Respected."

"Wealthy."

"A good husband."

"But his daughter..."

She set the glass down.

"...was always an obstacle."

Olivia felt a chill run through her body.

"You actually believe that."

Vanessa looked out the window.

"I spent my childhood competing with my father's first family."

"My half-brother inherited everything."

"My mother spent twenty years pretending she didn't care."

"I promised myself I'd never live second place."

Olivia's expression softened—for only a moment.

"I'm sorry that happened to you."

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

"So was I."

"But pain teaches valuable lessons."

"No," Olivia replied.

"It teaches us what not to become."

---

The room fell silent.

Olivia slowly folded the paper.

"I'm giving this to Daniel."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"No, you're not."

"I have to."

"You owe me."

"I owe the truth."

Vanessa took one slow step forward.

"If you walk out that door with those papers..."

"...our friendship is over."

Olivia looked at the woman she'd once considered a sister.

Then at the handwritten plans.

Finally, she said quietly,

"I think our friendship ended long before today."

She walked toward the door.

Vanessa didn't stop her.

She simply stood there.

Watching.

Thinking.

Planning.

As the door closed behind Olivia, Vanessa picked up her phone and scrolled to a contact she hadn't called in over three years.

The name on the screen was enough to send a chill through her.

Marcus Hale.

A private investigator.

A man who specialized in finding secrets...

...and making them disappear.

Vanessa pressed the call button.

The line rang once.

Twice.

Then a deep voice answered.

"I was wondering when I'd hear from you."

Vanessa looked out the chapel window, where Daniel was helping Lily into his car.

Her eyes narrowed.

"The wedding is off."

There was a brief silence.

Marcus finally asked,

"What do you need?"

Vanessa's voice became cold enough to match the steel in her eyes.

"I need everything you still have on Daniel Carter."

"And this time..."

May you like

"...I want his daughter to disappear from his life."
