Chapter 10 — The Vault Beneath Chicago

Chapter 10 — The Vault Beneath Chicago

The FBI arrived within hours.

Agents sealed off the cemetery.

Bomb technicians searched every inch of the grounds.

Vincent ignored them all.

He now possessed three clues.

Maria's letter.

The brass key engraved with "M."

And Elena's revelation about the safety deposit box.

They all pointed toward one destination.

The First National Trust Bank.

Built beneath downtown Chicago nearly a century earlier, its underground vault was famous for surviving fires, floods, and even gang wars.

Only Elena knew the box number.

As Vincent's convoy entered the underground parking garage, Tony noticed something unusual.

"No customers."

The enormous bank appeared almost deserted.

"Too quiet," he muttered.

Vincent agreed.

Two bodyguards entered first.

The manager greeted them nervously.

"Mrs. Martinez?"

Elena nodded.

"My husband rented a private box years ago."

The manager checked the records.

His face turned pale.

"It still exists."

"No one has accessed it since 1994."

He escorted them through layers of reinforced steel doors before stopping outside Vault C.

The manager inserted one key.

Elena inserted the silver key she had recovered from a hidden compartment sewn inside Sophie's stuffed rabbit—the same toy she had carried everywhere since childhood without knowing what it concealed.

The heavy lock clicked.

Inside the safety deposit box lay several carefully wrapped packages.

A VHS videotape.

Three thick financial ledgers.

A revolver sealed inside an evidence bag.

Dozens of photographs.

And one sealed envelope.

Across the front were six handwritten words.

Open only with Vincent Torino present.

No one spoke.

Vincent slowly broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter from Elena's late husband.

If you're reading this, then I failed.

My investigation uncovered something no honest officer was supposed to discover.

Maria Torino was never the real target.

She died protecting a witness.

The man responsible still controls people inside the police, the courts, and organized crime.

His face appears on the videotape.

Vincent's breathing became shallow.

Tony picked up the VHS cassette.

"So we finally know who killed Maria."

Before anyone could answer—

The vault lights suddenly flickered.

Then went completely dark.

A heavy steel blast door slammed shut behind them with a thunderous boom.

Emergency lights bathed the underground chamber in blood-red light.

A calm voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Welcome, Vincent."

"You've spent thirty years chasing ghosts."

A pause.

May you like

"But now..."

"...the ghost has finally found you."
