Chapter 11 — The Face on the Tape

Chapter 11 — The Face on the Tape
The vault echoed with the metallic clang of the blast door locking into place.
Tony spun toward the entrance, firing twice at the thick steel.
The bullets ricocheted harmlessly.
"We're sealed in," one bodyguard shouted.
Emergency lights bathed the underground chamber in a crimson glow.
Vincent ignored the panic around him.
His attention remained fixed on the old VHS cassette resting inside the safety deposit box.
"The tape," he said calmly.
"We need to see it."
The bank manager, trembling uncontrollably, pointed toward an outdated security office adjacent to the vault.
"There... there's an old VCR system. The cameras used to record on VHS."
Tony and two guards forced open the office door.
Dust covered forgotten monitors and aging equipment.
After several anxious minutes, the machine finally whirred to life.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then...
A grainy image appeared.
The date stamped in the lower corner read:
October 18, 1957.
The footage showed a dimly lit warehouse.
Young Detective Daniel Martinez—Elena's late husband—held a hidden camera from behind stacked wooden crates.
Across the room stood several powerful men gathered around a long table.
One of them was unmistakable.
A much younger Vincent Torino.
His dark hair was untouched by gray, and his expression was harder than stone.
Another man entered the frame.
Maria Torino.
She looked frightened but determined.
Vincent's heart pounded.
"I never knew she was there..."
On the tape, Maria hurried toward a terrified young woman holding a crying baby.
Daniel whispered into the hidden microphone.
"The witness is here."
Maria wrapped a coat around the woman.
"You have to leave now."
Suddenly—
Gunfire erupted.
The image shook violently.
People screamed.
Daniel dropped behind cover as bullets tore through the warehouse.
The witness escaped through a side door.
Maria remained behind.
She turned...
Looked directly toward the hidden camera...
And smiled.
One final, heartbreaking smile.
Then a man stepped from the shadows and fired.
The screen exploded into static.
Silence filled the security office.
No one moved.
Vincent stood frozen.
For thirty years...
He had believed Maria died because she was his wife.
The tape proved otherwise.
She had knowingly sacrificed herself to save someone else.
Tony slowly rewound the final seconds.
"Pause it."
The frozen image sharpened.
There, reflected in a warehouse window, stood the shooter.
Only part of his face was visible.
But Vincent recognized him instantly.
"No..."
His voice barely escaped.
"It can't be..."
Tony stared at the screen.
"You know him?"
May you like
Vincent nodded slowly.
"I buried him myself."
