Chapter 14 — The Master Behind the Shadows

Chapter 14 — The Master Behind the Shadows

Dust drifted through the shattered vault like gray snow.

The emergency lights flickered overhead, throwing long, distorted shadows across the cracked concrete floor.

Anthony Bellucci stood motionless at the center of the ruined chamber.

Thirty years.

For thirty years Vincent Torino had believed the man was dead.

Yet here he was.

Older.

His once-black hair had turned silver.

Deep scars stretched across the left side of his face, souvenirs from the warehouse explosion everyone believed had killed him.

He leaned lightly on an ebony cane, smiling as though greeting an old friend instead of the man who wanted him dead.

"You've aged well, Vincent."

Vincent slowly raised his pistol.

"I buried you."

Anthony chuckled.

"You buried another man's body."

Tony stepped beside Vincent despite the blood running down his arm.

"Boss, let me end this."

Anthony calmly shook his head.

"If you shoot me now, every answer dies with me."

Vincent didn't lower the gun.

"You have ten seconds."

Anthony sighed.

"You still think Maria died because of a gang war."

"The tape proved otherwise."

"It proved only half the truth."

Elena exchanged a worried glance with Tony.

Anthony slowly reached inside his overcoat.

Every weapon in the room instantly pointed toward him.

Instead of a gun...

He removed an old pocket watch.

Its gold surface was scratched with age.

Vincent's breathing suddenly slowed.

He recognized it immediately.

Maria had given him that watch on their fifth wedding anniversary.

He had buried it with her.

"Impossible..."

Anthony held the watch gently.

"Maria asked me to keep it."

Vincent's voice became ice.

"Don't you dare lie about her."

"I'm not."

Anthony pressed the tiny latch.

The watch opened.

Inside was a faded photograph.

Maria...

Holding a newborn baby.

Vincent stared at it.

"We never had children."

Anthony looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"But the woman she was protecting did."

Silence consumed the vault.

Anthony continued.

"The witness Maria died protecting gave birth only two days earlier."

He slowly pointed toward Sophie.

"The child wasn't yours."

Everyone looked at Sophie.

The little girl instinctively clung to Elena.

Anthony lowered his hand.

"But her family..."

He paused.

"...is connected to that child."

Elena's face drained of color.

"My husband..."

Anthony nodded.

"Daniel Martinez spent twenty-five years hiding the last witness from the people who murdered Maria."

Tony frowned.

"Then why attack Elena now?"

Anthony's expression became deadly serious.

"Because someone finally discovered where Daniel hid the evidence."

Vincent stepped closer.

"Who?"

Anthony answered with only one name.

"Michael Harrington."

The room went silent.

Tony blinked.

"The former police commissioner?"

Anthony laughed bitterly.

"The former commissioner."

"The current senator."

"The man Chicago calls a hero."

Vincent felt something cold settle inside his chest.

Harrington.

He had attended Maria's funeral.

He had shaken Vincent's hand.

He had promised to find the killers.

For thirty years...

The murderer had stood beside him.

Suddenly every emergency light went dark.

The vault disappeared into complete darkness.

Then came the unmistakable sound of slow applause.

Clap...

Clap...

Clap...

A deep voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Anthony."

"You've always talked too much."

A massive steel door on the far side of the vault slowly lifted.

Floodlights burst on.

Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries poured inside wearing tactical armor without insignia.

At their center stood a tall man in a tailored navy suit.

His silver hair was perfectly combed.

His smile was warm.

Almost grandfatherly.

Senator Michael Harrington.

He calmly adjusted his cufflinks.

"Vincent."

"It's been a very long time."

Vincent's finger tightened around the trigger.

Harrington smiled.

"If you shoot..."

He gestured toward the surrounding mercenaries.

"...none of you leave alive."

Anthony quietly whispered,

"I told you."

May you like

"The real king was never in the underworld."

"He was in government."
