Chapter 5 — The Watcher in the Hallway

The black envelope never left Vincent Torino's hand.

Even after Tony carefully folded the photograph back inside, Vincent continued staring at the words burned into his memory.

I never left. Find me first.

It wasn't merely a threat.

It was a challenge.

And whoever had written it knew exactly which wound had never healed.

Tony glanced toward the nurse's station before lowering his voice.

"Our men checked every entrance. Nobody saw who left it."

Vincent slowly slipped the envelope inside his jacket.

"That means they wanted to be unseen."

The hospital corridor had grown strangely quiet.

Outside, rain hammered against the windows, blurring the city lights into streaks of silver.

Inside the intensive care unit, surgeons continued monitoring Elena Martinez.

She had survived the operation, but the doctors warned the next twenty-four hours would determine whether she recovered—or slipped away forever.

Sophie refused to sleep.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket several sizes too large, she sat beside the waiting room window, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.

Vincent approached quietly.

"You should rest."

She shook her head.

"What if Mama wakes up and I'm not there?"

"You'll still hear her."

"I promised Daddy I'd always protect her."

The words caught Vincent off guard.

"I thought your father passed away."

Sophie nodded.

"He did."

Her voice became almost a whisper.

"But before he died, he told me..." She swallowed hard. "...he said bad people would come one day."

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"What exactly did he say?"

She closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"He said..." She spoke slowly. "'If strangers ever ask about the silver key... never tell them where Mama hid it.'"

Tony looked at Vincent.

Neither man had ever heard Elena mention a silver key.

Before Vincent could ask another question, one of his bodyguards hurried down the hallway.

"Boss."

"What?"

"We caught someone watching the ICU."

Tony immediately drew his pistol beneath his jacket.

"Where is he?"

"He ran when we approached."

"Did you get a look?"

The guard handed over a small object wrapped in a handkerchief.

"We found this where he was standing."

Vincent unfolded the cloth.

Inside lay an old brass key.

Its handle had been engraved with a single letter.

M.

For Maria.

Or...

Martinez.

Someone wasn't just watching Elena.

They were leading Vincent somewhere.
