Chapter 15 — The Door That Never Opened

Chapter 15 — The Door That Never Opened
The underground vault became a battlefield without a single shot being fired.
More than thirty mercenaries surrounded Vincent, Tony, Elena, Sophie, and Anthony.
Every rifle remained trained on them.
Harrington stepped forward with the calm confidence of a man who had never been told "no."
"I've spent thirty years cleaning up unfinished business."
He looked toward Vincent.
"Maria almost destroyed everything."
Vincent's eyes burned with hatred.
"You killed her."
"No."
Harrington smiled faintly.
"I ordered her death."
"I've learned never to do unpleasant work myself."
Anthony took one slow step forward.
"You also murdered Daniel Martinez."
"Correct."
"And every witness afterward."
"Also correct."
Tony couldn't believe what he was hearing.
The man standing before them had calmly confessed to decades of murder as though discussing the weather.
Harrington looked at Sophie.
"Unfortunately..."
"...the last loose end is still alive."
Several mercenaries raised their rifles toward the little girl.
Vincent immediately stepped in front of her.
"So do I."
Tony moved beside him.
Then Anthony.
Then Elena.
For one extraordinary moment...
Former enemies stood shoulder to shoulder.
Harrington sighed.
"Sentiment."
"It always makes intelligent people predictable."
He raised one hand.
"Kill them."
Before anyone fired...
The entire vault shook violently.
Boom!
Another explosion.
Then another.
The ceiling rumbled.
Concrete rained from above.
One mercenary shouted into his radio.
"Sir!"
"The upper levels are collapsing!"
A third explosion ripped through the underground structure.
The lights failed.
Emergency alarms screamed.
Sprinklers erupted overhead.
Water poured through widening cracks.
Tony looked toward Vincent.
"We have one chance!"
Anthony pointed toward an old maintenance tunnel partially exposed by the explosion.
"The subway!"
Vincent grabbed Sophie's hand.
"Run!"
Bullets erupted behind them.
Mercenaries fired through smoke and falling debris.
Anthony remained behind, firing a pistol with surprising accuracy despite his age.
"Go!"
Vincent hesitated.
"What about you?"
Anthony smiled sadly.
"I've been dead for thirty years."
He pulled two grenades from inside his coat.
"Today..."
"...I'm finally burying the right man."
He threw them toward Harrington's advancing soldiers.
The tunnel disappeared behind a wall of fire.
Vincent, Elena, Sophie, and Tony sprinted through the collapsing maintenance passage as explosions echoed behind them.
The ancient subway tunnel trembled with every step.
Chunks of concrete crashed around them.
Finally...
A rusted emergency ladder led upward.
Tony forced open a heavy manhole cover.
Fresh night air rushed inside.
One by one they climbed into a deserted Chicago alley.
Behind them, the ground shook.
The bank collapsed inward with a deafening roar.
Police sirens wailed in every direction.
Fire trucks screamed toward the disaster.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Vincent looked back at the smoking ruins.
Anthony was gone.
Harrington was gone.
So was every piece of evidence inside the vault.
Or so it seemed.
Sophie gently tugged on Vincent's sleeve.
"Mister Vincent..."
She held out something she had unknowingly picked up during the escape.
It was a small black flash drive.
No labels.
No markings.
Only a tiny silver engraving.
1957
Tony's eyes widened.
"The evidence..."
Vincent turned the flash drive over in his hand.
Before he could speak, it suddenly blinked.
A tiny hidden light flashed blue.
Then red.
A tracking device.
Someone knew exactly where they were.
Far above the city...
Inside a black helicopter disappearing into the clouds...
A man wearing a headset smiled as a blinking dot moved across a digital map.
He quietly spoke into his microphone.
"They escaped."
A pause.
Then another voice answered.
"Excellent."
"Now the real hunt begins."
The helicopter disappeared into the storm.
Vincent closed his fist around the flash drive.
For the first time in thirty years, he wasn't fighting for revenge.
He was fighting for the truth.
And somewhere in the darkness...
May you like
The true mastermind was still watching.
THE END... OR IS IT?
