Chapter 10: First Course

"I'm right here, Vargas," Eleanor’s calm, detached voice suddenly floated through the PA system she had jury-rigged in the manager’s office an hour prior. The sound crackled and echoed from all directions at once, completely disorienting the heavily armed men below. They spun around, aiming their flashlights wildly into the rafters. "Send my family into the hangar. Once they are safely inside and I confirm they are unharmed, I will lower the Pelican case to you."

Vargas sneered, spitting onto the gravel. "Nice try, you crazy old bat. We all go in together." He shoved Sarah violently forward by the shoulders. The group of eight mercenaries moved cautiously into the hangar, sweeping the shadows with their tactical lights, their boots thudding loudly against the concrete.

As the lead enforcer stepped over the threshold, his heavy combat boot snagged the nearly invisible fishing line Eleanor had rigged.

A sharp, mechanical snap echoed through the high rafters. Before the man could even look up, a heavy industrial marine pulley—solid iron and weighing nearly sixty pounds—detached from the ceiling. It plummeted thirty feet downward, striking the enforcer squarely on the top of his Kevlar helmet. The sheer kinetic force crumpled him instantly, dropping him unconscious to the floor with a sickening thud.

"It's a trap!" Vargas roared, his eyes going wide as he raised his automatic weapon toward the ceiling. "Kill her! Tear the place apart!"

But before a single shot could be fired into the rafters, Eleanor reached out and threw the massive main breaker on the wall panel. A terrifying shower of blue and white sparks erupted from the electrical box as raw, ungrounded current surged directly into the metallic loading ramp currently occupied by three of the gunmen.
