Chapter 13: Close Quarters

"Vargas!" Eleanor yelled, her voice cutting sharply through the sounds of fire and rain.

She sprinted out from the heavy cover of the office walls, weaving dangerously through a cluttered maze of dry-docked, fiberglass boat hulls. She held her hand high in the air, gripping a small, rectangular object. "I have the drives right here!"

Vargas spun around, his cold eyes locking instantly onto Eleanor as she held up a sleek, silver encrypted hard drive. She had used a heavy-duty angle grinder to crack the biometric Pelican case wide open over an hour ago.

"Give it to me, you old witch!" Vargas snarled, his greed overriding his tactical sense. He abandoned David behind the truck and charged recklessly down the narrow, shadowed aisle between the towering boats. He fired wildly as he ran, the heavy bullets tearing massive chunks out of the fiberglass hulls mere inches from Eleanor’s head.

She didn't return fire. Instead, she retreated backward, moving steadily toward the deep-water launch slip at the very back of the shipyard. The storm was raging outside the open bay doors, churning the black, freezing ocean water into violent, white-capped waves that crashed aggressively against the rotting wooden pier.

She backed up until her heels literally touched the slippery edge of the wooden dock. There was nowhere left to run; behind her was a fifty-foot drop into the churning, freezing Atlantic. Vargas slowed his frantic pace, his chest heaving. A wicked, triumphant smile slowly spread across his scarred face as he leveled his assault rifle directly at her chest.

"End of the line, grandma. Hand it over, and I'll make it quick."
