Chapter 12: Unexpected Backup

Chapter 12: Unexpected Backup
Just as Eleanor shoved Sarah and Tommy safely behind the reinforced steel door of the manager's office, locking it from the outside, the deafening roar of a modified V8 engine shattered the ambient noise of the crackling fire.
A battered, rusted Ford pickup truck smashed violently through the burning wooden hangar doors. It fishtailed wildly across the wet concrete, spraying water and debris before slamming head-on into the side of one of the cartel's parked SUVs. The airbag deployed, but a second later, the driver’s side door kicked open. David leapt out, clutching his ribs and wildly brandishing a pump-action shotgun.
"Hey, ugly!" David screamed at Vargas at the top of his lungs, dramatically pumping the shotgun. He fired blindly into the smoke. The spray of heavy buckshot completely shattered the windshield of the SUV but missed Vargas by a wide margin.
Vargas didn't flinch. He calmly raised his assault rifle and returned fire with ruthless, professional precision. The volley of bullets tore through the metal of the truck, instantly pinning David down behind the heavy engine block.

"You stupid, dead little boy!" Vargas taunted, smoothly ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one into his weapon. "You really thought you could steal ten million from the cartel, run away, and hide behind your mommy's apron?"
Eleanor groaned internally. David. He always meant well, but his execution in every aspect of life was invariably catastrophic. She swiftly checked her pistol's magazine. Three rounds left. She was outgunned, and she had to draw Vargas's lethal attention away from her idiot son before he was ripped to shreds.
