Chapter 3: The Ultimatum

The storm howled outside the idling sedan, physically rocking the chassis of the heavy car, but inside, Eleanor felt perfectly, unnervingly still. The panic that should have paralyzed a normal sixty-seven-year-old woman never came. Instead, a sudden, terrifying clarity washed over her—a cold, familiar focus she hadn't felt in decades.

"Who is this?" she demanded. Her voice was flat, authoritative, and entirely devoid of the trembling fear the man clearly expected to hear.

"You can call me Vargas," the man rasped, chuckling darkly at what he assumed was her naive bravery. "Your son, David, has a nasty habit of skimming off the top. He thought your quaint little suburban fortress was the perfect place to stash ten million dollars in encrypted bearer bonds and cartel operational data. He hid it in your car, assuming you'd be stuck roasting ham and wiping noses for the next week."

Eleanor closed her eyes, letting out a slow, measured breath. David. Her middle child. The son who always showed up late to Thanksgiving, who always had elaborate excuses for his sudden windfalls, who carried a mysterious pager in the era of smartphones.

"I have your daughter and eight screaming grandchildren sitting on those pathetic air mattresses you laid out in the den," Vargas continued, his tone dripping with sadistic malice. "You have exactly three hours to turn that car around and bring it back to the house. If you call the police, if you deviate from the route, or if you take one minute longer... I start painting your perfectly decorated walls with your family. Starting with the youngest."

The line went dead with a harsh click.
