Chapter 17 - Echoes of the PastThe transition from autumn to winter brought a new rhythm to the Sterling estate. The children were thriving in their new environment, surrounded by support, love, and the boundless resources their father provided.

One crisp Tuesday afternoon, Thomas was leaving a high-stakes board meeting at the newly rebranded Apex Tower—formerly the Vance Holdings building. As he stepped out through the revolving glass doors, wrapping a cashmere scarf around his neck, a desperate voice called out to him.

"Thomas! Please, wait!"

Thomas paused, gesturing for his security detail to hold back. Stepping out from the shadow of the building was his brother-in-law, Richard. Behind him stood Lily and Hunter.

The trio looked drastically different from the last time Thomas had seen them. Richard’s designer suit was frayed at the cuffs, and he looked exhausted. Lily and Hunter wore plain, off-the-rack winter coats, their eyes glued to the pavement in deep shame.

"Richard," Thomas said neutrally. "You have exactly two minutes."

"Thomas, I... I know we don't have the right to ask," Richard stammered, his hands trembling in the freezing air. "But the accounts are still frozen. The trust is gone. We lost the apartment last week. We're living in a one-bedroom rental in Queens. I can't find a job because the Vance name is toxic in this city."

Thomas remained impassive. "Consequences usually are."

Richard swallowed hard, pushing his children slightly forward. "It's the kids, Thomas. They’re failing out of the public school. Hunter wants to go to community college next year, but we can't even afford the application fees. Please. You have billions. We’re family. Just... just give us a loan. To get them through school."

Thomas looked at Lily and Hunter. The arrogant teenagers who had laughed while Jacob scrubbed tables were gone, replaced by terrified kids who had finally realized how the real world worked.

"Look at me," Thomas commanded.

Lily and Hunter slowly raised their eyes.

"When you had money, you used it as a weapon to hurt people who were smaller and weaker than you," Thomas said, his voice firm but devoid of the malice he held for their grandparents. "You laughed at my son. You humiliated him for entertainment."

Tears welled up in Lily's eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I am so, so sorry, Uncle Thomas. We were stupid. We were just doing what Grandpa told us to do."

Thomas studied them for a long moment. He was a ruthless businessman, but he wasn't a monster. He didn't want to see children suffer, even these children.

"I won't give you a dime, Richard," Thomas said, causing Richard's face to fall in despair. "But," Thomas added, turning his attention entirely to Hunter and Lily, "I believe in education. And I believe people can change."

He pulled a sleek business card from his pocket and handed it to Hunter.

"This is the number for the Apex Scholarship Foundation," Thomas said. "You will apply for a grant, just like thousands of other students. If your grades improve, and if you each complete five hundred hours of community service at the city's youth shelters, the foundation will cover your community college tuition. But you will earn it. No free rides. No nepotism. Do you understand?"

Hunter clutched the card as if it were a lifeline, nodding frantically. "Yes, sir. Thank you. Thank you so much."

Thomas walked past them toward his waiting SUV. He had dismantled the corrupt Vance empire, but perhaps, from the ashes, Richard's children might actually grow up to be decent human beings.
