Chapter 8 - The Velvet RopeHelen Vance refused to surrender. While her husband paced their empty house in a state of catatonic shock over the loss of his company, Helen had spent the morning trying to pretend the sky wasn't falling.

Social standing was everything. If she showed weakness, the society vultures would tear her apart. Tonight was the planning committee meeting for the Winter Gala, her crowning achievement. If she could just secure the Grand Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel and keep up appearances, they could survive this.

Dressed in a pristine Chanel suit, her hair perfectly coiffed, Helen walked into the opulent lobby of the Plaza. She spotted the Mayor’s wife and three other prominent society ladies waiting near the concierge desk.

"Ladies!" Helen called out, forcing a bright, painfully fake smile as she approached them. "I am so sorry I'm late. The traffic from the hills is simply atrocious today."

The ladies exchanged uncomfortable glances. The Mayor’s wife, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn, took a small step back. "Helen... are you sure you should be here? We heard... well, rumors about Robert's company."

"Vicious gossip, Evelyn. Pure jealousy," Helen waved her hand dismissively, her diamond rings catching the light. "Robert is simply restructuring. Now, let’s go confirm the ballroom. I told the manager I wanted the imported orchids this year."

Helen confidently strutted to the front desk, bypassing the line, and tapped her nails on the marble counter. "I need the events director. Tell him Mrs. Vance is here for her ballroom inspection."

The young concierge looked at his computer screen, typed in a few keys, and then looked up with a strained expression. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Vance, but your reservation for the Grand Ballroom has been canceled."

Helen’s fake smile shattered. "Excuse me? Do you know who I am? I have hosted this gala here for ten years! I demand to see the manager!"

"That won't be necessary, Helen."

The voice came from behind her. Helen spun around to see Marcus walking across the lobby, flanked by two towering men in dark suits. The society ladies gasped, whispering among themselves.

"You," Helen hissed, recognizing Thomas's attack dog from the office. "What are you doing here? Tell this idiot concierge to fix my reservation."

"The reservation was canceled by the new owner of the Plaza," Marcus said clearly, his voice carrying across the quiet lobby. "Apex Capital acquired this property late last night. And Mr. Sterling has implemented a strict new policy regarding the clientele we serve."

"Mr. Sterling..." Helen stammered, the blood rushing from her face. She looked at Evelyn and the other ladies, realizing they were hanging on every word.

"Yes," Marcus continued loudly. "Mr. Sterling does not permit individuals with outstanding debts, pending fraud investigations, or a history of abusing catering staff to utilize the facilities."

A collective gasp echoed from the society ladies. Evelyn covered her mouth, her eyes darting between Helen and Marcus in shock.

"You're lying!" Helen screamed, her carefully crafted facade crumbling completely. "Thomas is a mechanic! He's white trash!"

"Thomas Sterling is a billionaire, Mrs. Vance. And he holds the deed to your house, which will be foreclosed upon by the end of the week," Marcus replied calmly. He nodded to the hotel security guards. "Mrs. Vance is trespassing. Please escort her out. If she resists, call the police."

Helen looked back at her friends, her eyes silently begging for help. But Evelyn simply turned her back, and the others quickly followed suit. She was toxic. She was finished.

As two security guards grabbed Helen by the elbows and dragged her kicking and screaming through the revolving doors, she realized the terrifying truth: Thomas wasn't just taking their money. He was erasing their entire existence.
