Chapter 5 - The Desperate PleaThe elevator doors chimed open on the penthouse floor of Apex Capital. Robert and Helen stumbled out, looking completely unraveled.

Robert’s suit was wrinkled, his nose was a horrific shade of purple, and he looked like he had aged ten years overnight. Helen was no better; her makeup was smudged, and the arrogant tilt of her chin had been entirely broken.
Two large security guards in black suits flanked the elevator, gesturing for the couple to move forward. They were led down a sleek corridor lined with modern art and into Thomas’s massive office.
Thomas was sitting casually behind his desk, signing a document. He didn't look up when they entered.
"Thomas," Robert croaked, his voice cracking. He practically threw himself toward the desk but stopped short as Marcus stood up from the corner, blocking his path.
"Sit down, Robert," Thomas commanded, his eyes still glued to the paper.
Robert and Helen slowly sank into the plush leather chairs opposite the desk. They looked around the opulent office—the imported wood, the original paintings, the panoramic view of the city skyline. It was a physical manifestation of power they had never realized their son-in-law possessed.
Thomas finally placed his pen down and folded his hands. He looked at them with dead, empty eyes. "You have exactly two minutes. Speak."
"Thomas... Tommy, please," Helen started, forcing a tear to fall. "This is all a misunderstanding. A terrible, terrible mistake. Yesterday, emotions were running high..."
"A mistake?" Thomas repeated smoothly. "Forcing my eight-year-old to carry crystal trays and telling him he's paying for breakages out of his allowance... was that a typo in your parenting manual, Helen?"
Helen opened her mouth and closed it, her face flushing red.
"Thomas, we're ruined," Robert pleaded, abandoning his pride entirely. "Apex Capital... we had no idea it was you. The debt call... you're wiping out everything I've built for forty years. My father started Vance Holdings."
"Your father built a respectable company. You ran it into the ground trying to keep up with country club dues," Thomas corrected coldly. "I bought your debt three years ago because Sarah asked me to. She was crying, Robert. Crying because she knew you were going under and couldn't bear to see you fail. I stepped in, anonymously, to save your pathetic pride."
Robert looked as if he had been physically struck again. "Sarah... Sarah knew you had this?"
"She knew everything. We lived modestly because she hated what money did to people. She hated what it did to you," Thomas said, his voice finally carrying an edge of anger. "But I kept you afloat. For her. And how did you repay her memory? By treating her children like garbage."
"We can change!" Robert begged, his hands trembling on his knees. "I'll publicly apologize to the children. I'll get on my knees, Thomas. Just... just lift the freeze. Give us time to refinance. Please."
Thomas leaned back in his chair, shaking his head slowly. "Do you know what Jacob asked me in the car last night, Robert?"
The older man swallowed hard, saying nothing.
"He asked me if he scrubbed the table clean enough," Thomas said, his voice dangerously quiet. "My six-year-old boy thought he had failed his job as a servant at your party."
Helen burst into loud, ugly sobs, burying her face in her hands.
"There is no refinancing. There is no apology," Thomas said, standing up. "You wanted my children to know their place. Now, I’m showing you yours. By Friday, Vance Holdings will belong to Apex Capital. We will liquidate it for parts. Your house will be seized by the bank next month."
"You can't do this! We are family!" Helen screamed, suddenly lunging forward.
Marcus stepped in instantly, grabbing her by the arms and gently but firmly pushing her back into the chair.
"We stopped being family the moment Sarah died," Thomas said, adjusting his suit jacket. "And you sealed your fate yesterday. Oh, and Richard's kids? They’re being expelled from Briarwood Academy this afternoon. Turns out the board doesn't like it when students film themselves abusing younger children."
Robert gasped, clutching his chest. "You went after my grandchildren? You're a monster."
Thomas looked down at the broken man, feeling absolutely nothing but cold satisfaction.
May you like
"No, Robert," Thomas said softly as he walked toward the door. "I'm just the guy paying the bill. Security, escort them out. If they return, have them arrested for trespassing."
Thomas walked out of the office, leaving Robert and Helen sobbing amid the ruins of their empire. The debt had been paid.
