Chapter 9 - The Hostile TakeoverThe headquarters of Vance Holdings was a towering glass skyscraper in the financial district. For decades, the Vance name glowing in neon at the top had been a symbol of corporate dominance.

Today, it was a tomb.

At 9:00 AM the following morning, Thomas stepped out of his black SUV, buttoning his suit jacket. Marcus fell into step beside him as they walked through the spinning glass doors of the lobby.

Panic was palpable in the air. Employees were whispering in clusters; phones were ringing unanswered. Word of the Apex Capital takeover had leaked to the press, and the stock had plummeted to pennies before trading was halted.

Thomas ignored the chaos, stepping into the private executive elevator and swiping a master keycard Marcus provided. They rode in silence to the 50th floor.

When the doors opened, they stepped into the luxurious executive suite. Robert Vance’s corner office was at the end of the hall, the door slightly ajar.

Thomas pushed the door open without knocking.

Robert was standing behind his massive oak desk, frantically tossing files and framed photos into a cardboard box. He looked up, freezing like a deer in headlights. His face was gray, the dark circles under his eyes making him look ancient.

"Thomas," Robert breathed, taking a shaky step back.

"You're packing," Thomas noted, his voice devoid of any emotion. "Good. Saves my staff the trouble of doing it for you."

"I built this," Robert whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of rage and despair. "I built this empire from the ground up, and you stole it from me with a stroke of a pen."

"You built nothing," Thomas corrected sharply, stepping into the room. "Your father built this company. You inherited it, mismanaged it, and embezzled millions to fund your wife’s country club lifestyle. The only reason this company survived the last five years is because I quietly pumped my own money into it to hide your incompetence."

Robert slammed his hands on the desk. "I am still the CEO! I have a golden parachute in my contract. Ten million dollars severance if I am terminated without cause!"

Marcus chuckled softly from the doorway.

Thomas walked to the desk, pulled a thick, bound folder from his briefcase, and dropped it onto the wood with a heavy thud.

"This is the forensic audit Marcus completed overnight," Thomas said. "It details exactly how you funneled company money into offshore accounts to pay off your personal gambling debts and Helen's shopping sprees. It's fraud, Robert. Massive, undeniable fraud."

Robert stared at the folder, his hands beginning to shake violently.

"There is no golden parachute," Thomas leaned in close, his voice cold as ice. "There is no severance. You are fired for cause. And if you ever try to contact my children, or if you even look in my direction again, I won't just fire you. I will hand this folder to the District Attorney, and you will spend the rest of your miserable life in federal prison."

Robert collapsed into his desk chair, burying his face in his hands, weeping openly. The great patriarch of the Vance family was nothing more than a broken, terrified old man.

"Marcus," Thomas called out, turning his back on his former father-in-law.

"Yes, sir?"

"Call building security. Give him five minutes to take his personal photos, then escort him to the street. Change the locks, seize the servers, and take the Vance name off the building."

"Consider it done."

Thomas walked out of the office, the sound of Robert's sobs fading behind him. The revenge was complete. The cancer had been cut out of his family's life.

But as he walked toward the elevator, ready to go back to his children and start their new life, he didn't know that the deepest secret of the Vance family was still hiding in the files he had just seized.
