Chapter 7 - The Briarwood IncidentBriarwood Academy was the most exclusive private school in the state, a place where generations of old money sent their children to network and rule the hallways. Lily Vance and her brother, Hunter, were Briarwood royalty. As the grandchildren of Robert Vance, they walked the corridors with untouchable arrogance.

At 2:00 PM, Lily was sitting in the student lounge, laughing with her friends and ignoring her assignments.
"I'm telling you, it was hilarious," Lily bragged, examining her perfect manicure. "My cousin was literally on his knees scrubbing a table in front of everyone. It's like they enjoy being poor."
Her friends giggled, though a few looked uncomfortable.
Suddenly, the lounge doors opened, and the Headmaster’s assistant stepped in, looking grim. "Lily Vance. Hunter Vance. Headmaster Croft’s office. Now."
Lily rolled her eyes, grabbed her designer tote bag, and signaled for her brother. "Probably want to thank Dad for the new bleachers," she scoffed to her friends.
When they entered the mahogany-paneled office, they expected to see the Headmaster offering his usual fawning smiles. Instead, Headmaster Croft looked pale and terrified. Sitting in one of the leather visitor chairs was a man they had never seen before—Marcus, wearing a sharp, tailored suit and a predatory smile.
"Sit down, both of you," Croft ordered.
Lily frowned, crossing her arms. "Excuse me? My father is on the board, Mr. Croft. You don't speak to me—"
"Your father," Marcus interrupted smoothly, "is no longer on the board. As of an hour ago, he was forced to step down amidst a massive financial insolvency investigation. The Vance family check has bounced."
Hunter scoffed. "You're lying. Who even are you?"
Marcus ignored the boy and turned an iPad around, sliding it across the Headmaster's desk. The video began to play. It was Lily’s deleted footage—the shaky cell phone recording of six-year-old Jacob scrubbing a table while Lily’s voice laughed maliciously in the background, calling him "trash."
Lily’s face drained of color. "How did you... I deleted that!"
"The internet is forever, Miss Vance," Marcus said coldly. "Briarwood has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. Especially when the victims are small children."
"This is ridiculous!" Lily shrieked, standing up. "It was a family joke! I'm calling my dad!"
"Your father's phone is currently disconnected," Marcus informed her politely. "His company assets have been frozen. Headmaster Croft?"
Croft cleared his throat, unable to look the teenagers in the eye. "Lily, Hunter... effective immediately, you are expelled from Briarwood Academy. Please clean out your lockers. Security will escort you off the premises."
"You can't do this!" Hunter yelled, his face turning red. "We're Vances!"
"Not anymore," Marcus said softly. "As of today, being a Vance is a liability. Good luck in public school."
Thirty minutes later, Lily and Hunter stood on the curb outside the towering iron gates of Briarwood, holding cardboard boxes filled with their locker contents. The black Mercedes that usually picked them up was nowhere to be seen.
Lily frantically dialed her father’s number again. It went straight to voicemail. She tried her black Amex card to call an Uber.
