Chapter 10: The New Morning
Six months later, the Boston skyline shimmered under a bright, cloudless sky.
Nora sat in a leather chair in the executive suite of the Shawbridge Foundation. She wore a tailored navy blazer and a silk blouse—a stark contrast to the cheap black uniform she had worn a lifetime ago.
Grant and Celeste Mercer were currently awaiting trial for wire fraud, embezzlement, and a host of other federal charges. The scandal had rocked the city, but under Evelyn’s steady hand, the foundation had recovered, pivoting its focus to internal transparency.
The door to the office opened, and Evelyn walked in, carrying two cups of coffee. She handed one to Nora.
"The board approved the new initiative," Evelyn said, taking a seat behind her massive glass desk. "The whistle-blower protection program is officially funded."
"That's incredible news," Nora smiled, taking a sip of the coffee.
"They also approved your promotion," Evelyn added, sliding a heavy, embossed envelope across the desk. "Director of Internal Compliance. It comes with an office with a window, a significant salary increase, and, most importantly, no name badges."
Nora opened the envelope, looking at the contract inside. She thought about the puddle of ice water, the sheer terror of being voiceless, and the moment she decided to fight back.

"I accept," Nora said.
Evelyn smiled, raising her coffee cup. "Welcome to the real room, Nora. Take a seat at the table."
