Chapter 7: In the Dark

"What the—!" Grant’s angry shout echoed off the metal lockers.

Nora moved silently in her stocking feet. She counted her steps. Ten paces forward. Turn left at the laundry bins. Fifteen paces down aisle three.

She could hear Grant stumbling, his hands slapping against the metal doors as he tried to find his way. He was using a lighter for illumination, the tiny flame casting long, monstrous shadows across the room.

Nora reached locker 89. She didn't need to pry it; she just pulled the broken handle. It gave way with a soft squeak. She reached her hand into the top shelf. Her fingers brushed against her canvas tote bag, then slipped behind it to the thick manila folder she had crammed against the back wall.

Got it.

She pulled the folder to her chest.

Suddenly, the beam of a smartphone flashlight cut through the darkness, hitting Nora squarely in the face. It wasn't Grant.

May you like

It was Celeste Mercer.

"I thought I might find you down here," Celeste said coldly, holding her phone in one hand and a can of pepper spray in the other. "Grant! She's over here!"
