Chapter 5: The Descent

"We have to get to the locker room before he does," Nora said, standing up and dropping the cashmere throw. The damp fabric of her dress was uncomfortable, but she barely felt it now.

"Absolutely not," Evelyn replied firmly. "Security is sweeping the building. You are staying right here where it's safe."

"You don't understand," Nora urged. "My locker isn't secure. The latch is broken. Anyone can pull it open. If Grant finds the staff roster, he'll know which locker is mine. He will destroy the only physical proof you have."

Evelyn hesitated, weighing the risk. The digital lock down was thorough, but physical evidence was the nail in the coffin.

"Fine," Evelyn said, grabbing a master keycard from her desk. "But you stay behind me. If we see him, we run. Understood?"

Nora nodded. They slipped out of the office, avoiding the main gala hall where confused guests were still murmuring about the scene. They took the service stairs down to the basement. The air grew cooler, smelling of floor wax and stale coffee.

As they reached the bottom of the stairwell, Nora froze.

The heavy metal door leading to the locker room was already propped open.
