Chapter 6: The Broken Latch

Chapter 6: The Broken Latch

Evelyn held up a hand, signaling Nora to stop. They pressed their backs against the cold cinderblock wall. From inside the locker room, they could hear the violent clang of metal being struck.

Grant was prying the lockers open.

"Locker 42, 43..." Grant's voice muttered, tight with panic. Clang. "Where is it?"

Nora locked eyes with Evelyn and mouthed: Mine is 89. It's at the back.

Evelyn pulled out her phone, dialing security, but the basement had zero cellular reception. She cursed under her breath. They were on their own for the next few minutes.

"We need a distraction," Evelyn whispered. She pointed toward the main breaker box on the opposite wall of the hallway. "If I cut the lights, can you navigate the locker room in the dark?"

"I've worked the closing shift for eleven months," Nora whispered back. "I know this basement blindfolded."

"Get the file. Get out. Don't engage him."

Evelyn crept toward the breaker. Nora took a deep breath, slipped off her ruined high heels, and prepared to move.

Evelyn pulled the main switch. The basement plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
