Chapter 9: The Fall

Grant dropped the iron doorstop. It hit the concrete floor with a deafening clang. Celeste lowered her phone, the haughty sneer melting off her face.

"Evelyn, be reasonable," Grant stammered, raising his hands as the agents approached. "This is a misunderstanding. I was just retrieving my personal documents."

"Save it for the audit, Mr. Mercer," one of the agents said, pulling handcuffs from his belt.

Nora stepped forward and handed the manila folder directly to the agent. "These are the physical invoices. The LLC listed on them doesn't exist. It's a shell company."

Grant glared at Nora as the cuffs clicked around his wrists. "You're nothing," he spat. "You're just the hired help."

Nora looked him dead in the eye. "Not anymore."

As the agents led Grant and a sobbing Celeste out of the locker room, the oppressive tension in the air finally shattered. Nora slumped back against the lockers, exhaling a breath she felt like she had been holding for hours.

Evelyn walked over, her immaculate ivory pantsuit still completely unwrinkled despite the chaos. She looked down at Nora’s bare feet and soaked dress.

"You did well today, Nora," Evelyn said softly. "Better than well."
