Chapter 10 - Justice and Freedom

The courtroom was completely silent as the jury foreman stood up to read the verdict.
"On the charge of aggravated battery of a child, we find the defendant, guilty."
"On the charge of filing a false police report, we find the defendant, guilty."
"On the charge of witness intimidation, we find the defendant, guilty."
Preston collapsed back into his heavy wooden chair, loudly sobbing.
There was no sympathy left in the room for the fallen golden child.
The judge immediately moved to the sentencing phase, refusing to delay the inevitable.
"Preston Vance, you have shown an absolute absence of remorse."
"You viciously attacked an innocent child to protect your own fragile ego."
"I am sentencing you to fifteen years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole."
"Once you serve that sentence, you will be transferred to federal custody for your financial crimes."
A heavy gavel strike sealed his permanent fate.
The bailiffs aggressively hauled him to his feet.
As they dragged him toward the holding cells, he looked desperately at our parents.
"Mom! Dad!" he screamed, his voice cracking with pure terror.
My parents just sat there, completely paralyzed by their own impending legal ruin.
They were scheduled to face their own criminal trials the very next week.
I stood up from my seat, feeling a massive weight finally lift from my shoulders.
I walked out of the courtroom, completely ignoring the flashing cameras of the press.
The bright Chicago sun was breaking beautifully through the dark storm clouds.
I drove straight home, where Sophie was waiting eagerly on the front porch.
She ran into my open arms, burying her small face against my neck.
"Is it over, Mommy?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, my brave girl," I smiled, kissing the top of her head.
"The bad man is locked away forever."
"And we never have to see those toxic people ever again."
We walked back inside our home together, leaving the darkness in the past.
We were finally free from the heavy, suffocating shadows of the Vance family.

The wolves were all locked securely in cages.
And the lamb was finally safe to roam in the light.
