Chapter 6 - The Bride’s Confession

The relentless rain continued to wash over the gray streets of Chicago.
Inside my small but cozy apartment, the atmosphere was quiet and safe.
Sophie was resting on the living room sofa with a stack of coloring books.
Her head was heavily bandaged, but her sweet smile had slowly started to return.
The doorbell rang, shattering the peaceful silence of our sanctuary.
I checked the peephole and felt a sudden wave of absolute shock.
Standing on my welcome mat was Clara, the bride who had watched my daughter bleed.
She was no longer wearing the million-dollar diamonds or the designer silk.
She was wearing a simple trench coat, looking utterly exhausted and terrified.
I opened the door just a few inches, keeping the security chain securely fastened.
"What do you want, Clara?" I asked, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
Tears immediately welled up in her striking green eyes.
"Evelyn, please let me in."
"I have already filed for a legal annulment."
"I just came from the police precinct."
I hesitated for a moment, analyzing her trembling hands and pale face.
I finally unhooked the chain and stepped aside to let her into the hallway.
She walked in slowly, her eyes immediately darting toward the living room.
She saw Sophie coloring quietly and let out a broken, miserable sob.
"I am so incredibly sorry," Clara whispered, covering her face with her hands.
"I was in shock that night."
"I didn't know what to do when your parents told everyone to stay back."
I crossed my arms, refusing to offer her any warm comfort.
"Shock does not excuse leaving a bleeding child on the floor, Clara."
"You cared more about the blood on your expensive aisle runner."
She nodded frantically, tears spilling down her cheeks in heavy streams.
"You are absolutely right."
"I was a coward, and I will regret my inaction for the rest of my life."
"But I came here today to give you something."
She reached into her oversized designer purse with shaking fingers.
She pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope and handed it to me.
"Preston kept a hidden ledger in the safe of our new penthouse."
"I opened it yesterday while packing up all my belongings."
"It details years of embezzlement from his own clients at Vance Financial."
"He is not just a violent monster."
"He is a calculated, cold-blooded thief."
I stared at the envelope, realizing the absolute goldmine I was holding.
"Why give this to me?" I asked, narrowing my eyes in suspicion.

"Because your brother ruined my life," she answered bitterly.
"And I want to help you bury him."
