Chapter 11 - The Enablers' Downfall

The swift hammer of justice did not stop with my brother.

One week after Preston was shipped off to the state penitentiary, my parents finally faced their own reckoning.

The media circus outside the courthouse was even larger than before.

My mother wore a stark black dress, looking as though she were attending a funeral.

My father walked with a heavy limp, the stress of the impending trial visibly breaking his physical health.

They had spent their entire lives cultivating an image of absolute perfection.

They had hosted charity galas, donated to political campaigns, and looked down upon anyone who did not meet their impossible standards.

Now, they were just two desperate criminals walking into a heavily guarded courtroom.

I sat in the very back row, entirely unbothered by the venomous glares they shot in my direction.

The prosecution presented the digital audio recording of my father attempting to bribe me.

His arrogant voice echoed through the silent room, offering me two million dollars to betray my own daughter.

The jury listened with expressions of pure, unadulterated disgust.

My mother’s defense attorney tried to argue that she was merely a distressed grandmother acting out of panic.

The prosecutor immediately dismantled that pathetic lie by presenting the false police report she had willingly signed.

She had knowingly sworn under oath that an eight-year-old child had violently attacked a grown man.

There was no escaping the mountain of undeniable evidence.

When the verdict was read, my mother let out a loud, theatrical gasp and fainted directly onto the defense table.

The judge remained completely unimpressed by her dramatic performance.

"You have poisoned the concept of family to protect a violent predator," the judge declared firmly.

They were both sentenced to five years in federal prison for witness tampering and obstruction of justice.

The bailiffs approached them with cold, heavy steel handcuffs.

My father begged for leniency, claiming his heart condition required private medical care.

The judge simply banged the gavel and ordered them to be remanded into custody immediately.

I walked out of the courthouse that afternoon feeling a strange, profound sense of emptiness.

I did not feel joy, nor did I feel sadness.

I simply felt the heavy chains of my childhood finally snapping into a million pieces.

The Vance family name was permanently destroyed in Chicago.

Their sprawling mansion was seized by the federal government to pay for Preston's massive restitution debts.

They had sacrificed absolutely everything for their golden child.

And in the end, they were left with absolutely nothing.
