Chapter 8 - Handcuffs for the Enablers

The justice system usually moved slowly, but Detective Miller was a force of nature.

He listened to the recording of my parents' desperate bribe the very next morning.

His jaw tightened with absolute righteous fury.

"They just handed us the nail for their own coffins," the detective growled.

Within hours, arrest warrants were swiftly issued for both of my parents.

They were arrested while dining at their exclusive country club in downtown Chicago.

The local news stations managed to capture the entire humiliating scene on camera.

My mother was crying hysterically as an officer secured handcuffs around her wrists.

My father was shouting completely empty threats about suing the police department.

They were formally charged with witness tampering, bribery, and obstruction of justice.

Because they had previously signed false police reports claiming Preston acted in self-defense, they were also charged with perjury.

They were thrown into holding cells just down the hall from their precious son.

I watched the evening news broadcast from my living room with a cup of hot tea.

Sophie was sitting next to me, petting our golden retriever.

She didn't fully understand the legal proceedings, but she knew we were safe.

The news anchor’s voice echoed through the quiet room.

"The Vance family empire continues to crumble tonight."

"Prominent executive Preston Vance remains jailed without bail."

"And now, authorities confirm they are investigating massive financial fraud at Vance Financial."

Clara’s stolen ledger had worked perfectly.

The FBI had raided Preston's corporate office earlier that afternoon.

They seized dozens of computers, hard drives, and private financial records.

Preston was no longer just facing time for aggravated assault.

He was facing decades in federal prison for stealing millions from his investors.

His entire life had been constructed on a fragile foundation of lies and entitlement.

And I had been the one to finally kick the foundation out from under him.

My phone rang, displaying Detective Miller’s number on the bright screen.

"Evelyn, the district attorney has decided to fast-track the trial."

"With the video evidence and the financial crimes, they want him in front of a jury next month."

"Are you ready for this?"

May you like

I looked at the small, healing scar on my daughter's forehead.

"I have been ready for thirty years," I replied.
