Chapter 5: The Desperate Ploy
By day three, Victor was officially a fugitive. He had managed to evade the initial sweep, slipping through a network of underground contacts. The media was in a frenzy.
I was in the estate’s library when the heavy oak doors opened. Damian walked in, his face set in a grim line. "He made contact."

"With my chief of security. He offered a trade. Ten million dollars and his silence on certain... aggressive business tactics my family has used in the past, in exchange for you."
I let out a harsh laugh. "He’s trying to bargain with nothing."
"He thinks I’m like him," Damian said, walking over and pulling me into his arms. "He thinks women are assets to be traded when the market gets tough."
"What did you tell him?" I asked, resting my head against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.
"I told my team to trace the call. He’s hold up in a warehouse down by the docks. The FBI is twenty minutes away. But I thought... maybe we should get there first."

I looked up, meeting his dangerous gaze. I had spent months enduring Victor's psychological torment, letting him think he was breaking me down piece by piece. A part of me wanted to look him in the eye when he realized it was all over.
"Let's go," I said.
