Chapter 1 - The Man Behind the Doors

Grant remained frozen beside the NICU doorway.
Vanessaâs fingers tightened around his arm.
The private elevator at the far end of the corridor chimed less than four minutes after my call.
Two uniformed security officers stepped out first.
Behind them came a tall man in a charcoal overcoat, carrying a silver-tipped cane he did not need but had carried for as long as I could remember.
Arthur Hawthorne was seventy-eight years old.
He was also the founder and controlling owner of Beacon Crest Health Network.
Twelve hospitals.
Thirty-seven specialty clinics.
More than eighteen thousand employees.
Grantâs face turned gray.
My grandfather walked past him without acknowledgment.
He came directly to my bedside and bent carefully to kiss my forehead.
Then he looked through the glass at Noah and Elise.
For several seconds, the most powerful man in the hospital said nothing.
His eyes filled with tears.
âAre they stable?â
âNoah is holding steady.â
âElise is struggling.â
Grandfatherâs hand closed around mine.
Only then did he turn toward Grant.
âYou entered my hospital.â
His voice was quiet.
âYou abandoned my granddaughter after emergency surgery.â
His gaze shifted toward the incubators.
âAnd you called my great-grandchildren burdens.â
Grant swallowed.
âMr. Hawthorne, I think thereâs been a misunderstanding.â
âThere has.â
Grandfather straightened.
âYou misunderstood Emmaâs silence.â
Vanessa slowly released Grantâs arm.
The ivory coat moved with her, revealing the embroidered letters N and E near the inner seam.
Grandfather noticed them.
His expression hardened.
âTake off my granddaughterâs coat.â
Vanessaâs lips parted.
âGrant gave it to me.â
âIt was never his to give.â
One of the security officers stepped closer.
Vanessa removed the coat and dropped it onto the chair.
Grant recovered enough confidence to lift the leather folder.
âEmma already signed the divorce agreement.â
Grandfather glanced at the pages.
âUnder medication, days after nearly dying, while her children were receiving intensive care?â
âShe signed voluntarily.â
âIâm sure a judge will enjoy hearing your interpretation.â
Grant forced a laugh.
âYou may own the hospital, but you donât own the law.â
âNo.â
Grandfather looked toward the approaching group of attorneys.
âBut I employ people who understand it.â
A woman in a dark suit entered the corridor carrying a tablet.
She was Margaret Sloan, the general counsel for the entire hospital network.
She took the agreement from Grant and began reading.
Her eyes stopped on the final page.
âMr. Keller, where did you obtain this document?â
âMy attorney prepared it.â
Margaret turned the page toward him.
âThis agreement transfers assets that do not legally belong to you.â
Grantâs confidence faltered.
âWhat are you talking about?â
Margaret looked at me.
I gave her a small nod.
She faced Grant again.
âThe medical supply company you claim to own is controlled by a private trust.â
Grant stared at her.
May you like
Margaret closed the folder.
âAnd Emma Hawthorne is the trustâs sole beneficiary.â
