My grandfather’s personal assistant.

Thomas had managed Grandfather’s schedule for twenty-two years.

He knew every private meeting.

Every secure entrance.

He had provided Calvin with access codes and confidential patient information.

Thomas was brought into the hospital security office.

He denied everything until investigators showed him the bank deposits.

Then he looked directly at Grandfather.

“You never noticed people like us.”

Grandfather’s face showed no anger.

Only disappointment.

“I attended your daughter’s graduation.”

“You gave her a scholarship and expected gratitude forever.”

“I expected you not to endanger children.”

Thomas looked away.

His resentment had not begun with money.

Calvin had convinced him that the Hawthorne family would sacrifice employees to protect its reputation.

Thomas helped create the very scandal he claimed to fear.

The betrayal struck Grandfather harder than Grant’s crimes.

He returned to my room and removed his hospital identification badge.

“I built an institution where too much depended on whether one man could be trusted.”

“You built hospitals that saved thousands of lives.”

“And I allowed a system that could hide two deaths.”

He placed the badge on the table.

“When this is over, I’m stepping down.”

I stared at him.

“Grandfather.”

“This network needs accountability, not a family throne.”

Before I could answer, Dr. Morales entered.

Elise’s infection markers had improved.

The surgery could proceed.

Relief lasted only seconds.
