Chapter 8 - The Woman He Left Behind

Vanessa arrived at Beacon Crest under police escort the next morning.
She was not handcuffed.
She had agreed to answer questions voluntarily.
The confidence she had displayed in the NICU was gone.
Her makeup had been washed away.
She wore borrowed hospital clothes because investigators had collected her dress and handbag as evidence.
She stood outside my room for several minutes before entering.
âI need to speak with you.â
I looked at Grandfather.
He remained near the window.
Margaret activated a recorder with Vanessaâs permission.
Vanessa sat across from my bed.
âGrant told me you knew about us.â
âI did not.â
âHe said your marriage was finished.â
âIt was not.â
âHe said the twins werenât his.â
My hand tightened around the blanket.
âHe attended the fertility appointments.â
âI know that now.â
She lowered her eyes.
âHe told me you had trapped him.â
âAnd you believed him?â
âI wanted to.â
Her honesty did not earn forgiveness.
It did, however, sound real.
Vanessa placed both hands over her stomach.
âGrant took the company money.â
âHe also took your passport.â
âHe said we were leaving together.â
Tears filled her eyes.
âThen he disappeared while I was sleeping.â
Margaret leaned forward.
âWhere would he go?â
Vanessa hesitated.
âIf I tell you, I need protection.â
âFrom Grant?â
âFrom Calvin.â
Grandfather studied her.
âWhy?â
âBecause Calvin was never just helping Grant.â
Vanessaâs fingers trembled.
âHe controls a group of shell companies that supplied the expired parts.â
âGrant knew?â
âHe found out six months ago.â
âWhat did he do?â
âHe demanded half.â
Margaretâs expression hardened.
âExtortion.â
Vanessa nodded.
âGrant recorded their meetings as insurance.â
I looked toward the forensics report.
âThat explains the drive.â
Vanessaâs eyes widened.
âYou found it?â
âYou wore it into the NICU.â
Her hand moved instinctively toward the coat she no longer had.
Grant must have placed the drive there while helping her put it on.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
âThereâs another file.â
âWhere?â
âOn the drive.â
âThe team opened everything.â
âNo.â
She shook her head.
âThereâs a hidden partition.â
âWhat is inside it?â
Vanessa looked through the glass at Elise.
âThe real clinical reports.â
May you like
She swallowed.
âAnd a list of every patient harmed by the devices.â
