Chapter 19 - The Last Accomplice

Grandfather did not react when security asked for his identification badge.

He surrendered it voluntarily.

The access record showed his badge entering the NICU at 3:12 in the morning.

Grandfather had been asleep in the chair beside my bed at that time.

Thomas had copied his badge weeks earlier.

Security searched Thomas’s office again.

They found the duplicate inside a sealed envelope addressed to a respiratory therapist named Aaron Pike.

Aaron had treated both twins.

He had also collected routine blood samples.

When questioned, he admitted replacing Grant’s sample in the paternity test.

Grant had promised him two hundred thousand dollars.

The real samples were still stored in a locked cabinet.

A court-approved laboratory performed a new test under observation.

Grant was the biological father of Noah and Elise.

The false report was exposed before the end of the day.

Aaron was arrested.

Grant lost the final weapon he had attempted to use against us.

The criminal case moved forward.

Prosecutors offered Vanessa a reduced sentence in exchange for full testimony.

She accepted.

She provided meeting dates, account numbers, and recordings that confirmed Grant’s role in the defective-device conspiracy.

Before leaving the hospital, she came to my room one last time.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“You won’t receive it.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Her hand rested over her stomach.

“I’m going to raise this child without Grant.”

“That may be the first responsible decision you’ve made.”

She accepted the words without anger.

At the door, she stopped.

“He hated that you never needed him.”

“I thought I did.”

“No.”

Vanessa looked back at me.

“You loved him.”

“That is not the same thing.”

After she left, Dr. Morales allowed me to enter the NICU in a wheelchair.

I placed one hand through Noah’s incubator opening.

My other hand touched Elise’s tiny foot.

They were alive.

They were still fragile.

They would face months of treatment.

But their father no longer controlled their future.

Grandfather stood behind me.

“What will you do with Keller Medical?”

I watched my children breathe.

“I’m going to rebuild it.”

“Under a new name?”

“Yes.”
