Chapter 5 - The Cost of Silence

Margaret sealed the shipping authorization with the other evidence.
Grant insisted the document had been forged.
The digital signature matched his secure executive account.
The warehouse surveillance system showed him entering Dock Four two nights before the shipment.
He had not merely known about the expired sensors.
He had personally approved their distribution.
Grant was removed from all company operations before sunset.
His building access was revoked.
His corporate accounts were frozen.
The funds he had transferred from our joint accounts were traced to a private account in the Cayman Islands.
He had planned his escape long before walking into the NICU.
The knowledge hurt more than I expected.
I had spent three years building a marriage around a man who had been quietly preparing to abandon it.
That night, Noahâs condition improved.
Eliseâs did not.
Dr. Morales explained that the oxygen fluctuations had placed additional strain on her heart.
âShe may need surgery sooner than we hoped.â
âHow soon?â
âPossibly within forty-eight hours.â
I looked through the glass.
Eliseâs hand was smaller than the tip of my thumb.
âWill she survive it?â
Dr. Morales did not offer false certainty.
âShe is fighting.â
Grandfather sat beside me after the doctor left.
âYou donât have to fight Grant today.â
âYes, I do.â
âYou nearly died three days ago.â
âAnd Elise could die because he decided expired equipment was cheaper than safe equipment.â
Grandfather lowered his eyes.
âI should have told you to leave him sooner.â
âYou warned me.â
âI warned you to protect your wealth.â
He looked at the incubators.
âI should have warned you to protect your heart.â
A nurse entered carrying the ivory maternity coat.
Security had checked it before returning it.
Vanessa had left it in the corridor.
I folded the coat across my lap.
My fingers found the embroidered initials.
Noah and Elise.
Beneath the lining, I felt something hard.
There was a narrow hidden pocket I had asked the tailor to add for my hospital identification and emergency cash.
I opened it.
Inside was a small black flash drive.
It did not belong to me.
Grandfather leaned closer.
âDo you recognize it?â
I turned the drive over.
A red sticker was attached to one side.
May you like
KM-AUDIT MASTER.
Vanessa had unknowingly carried Grantâs most important secret directly into my hospital room.
