Chapter 13 - MOTHER
Ethan walked toward Evelyn slowly.
"Mom?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
He stopped several feet away.
"You're alive."
"I am."
"Why?"
Evelyn looked at Richard.
"Because Marcus threatened your father."
Marcus suddenly turned and ran.
Security guards blocked the hallway.
He was trapped.
Evelyn continued.
"I discovered that Marcus had been moving money through shell companies."
Richard nodded.
"I found out too late."
Evelyn looked at Ethan.
"I knew he would use you."
Ethan's voice broke.
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I thought it was the only way to keep you safe."
"You could have told me."
"I tried."
He looked at the letters.
"I know."
Evelyn approached him.
"I watched you from a distance."
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
"Why didn't you come home?"
"Because Marcus had people everywhere."
Claire stepped closer.
"Then why reveal yourself now?"
Evelyn looked at her.
"Because Marcus made one mistake."
"What?"
"He underestimated you."
Claire frowned.
Evelyn explained that Claire's old investigation had uncovered the same accounts Evelyn had been tracking.
Marcus had tried to manipulate Claire into destroying the evidence.
Instead, she had unknowingly preserved it.
Richard's security team brought Marcus into the room.
His face was expressionless.
Richard looked at him.
"It's over."
Marcus smiled.
"No."
He pulled a small device from his pocket.
The lights went out again.
A loud alarm sounded.
When the emergency lights returned, Marcus was gone.
But he had left something behind.
A phone.
It contained one video.
