Chapter 16 - THE CONFESSION
Marcus explained everything.
He had spent years manipulating Richard's company.
The missing money was only one part of a much larger scheme.
He wanted control of the company.
But Evelyn had discovered him.
So he threatened her.
When that failed, he created evidence implicating Ethan.
Claire listened carefully.
"Why involve me?"
Marcus smiled.
"Because you were the one person who could prove everything."
Claire understood.
"You wanted me to find the evidence."
"Yes."
"So you could destroy it."
Marcus nodded.
Ethan stepped forward.
"And the restaurant?"
Marcus looked confused.
"The restaurant?"
Claire answered.
"He tested me."
Marcus laughed.
"That was your mistake."
Ethan stared at him.
"How?"
"You underestimated the woman you were trying to test."
Marcus looked toward Claire.
"She has more courage than either of you."
Suddenly, police sirens sounded outside.
Marcus's smile disappeared.
He looked at Ethan.
"You called them."
Ethan nodded.
"You talked too much."
Marcus reached into his coat.
Police shouted.
He froze.
The weapon never left his pocket.
Officers entered.
Marcus was arrested.
Claire exhaled slowly.
Ethan looked at her.
"It's over."
She shook her head.
"No."
He frowned.
She pointed toward the screen.
"Look."
The screen still showed one final account.
An account Marcus hadn't mentioned.
Evelyn stepped closer.
Her face went pale.
"I know that number."
Richard stared at her.
"Whose is it?"
