Chapter 14 - THE VIDEO
They watched the video in silence.
The footage showed Evelyn entering a parking garage.
Marcus followed her.
They argued.
Then another person appeared.
Richard.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His father looked terrified.
Evelyn said something inaudible.
Marcus handed Richard a document.
Richard signed it.
The video ended.
Ethan turned toward his father.
"What did you sign?"
Richard looked devastated.
"A confidentiality agreement."
"Why?"
"Because Marcus threatened you."
Ethan shook his head.
"You knew."
"I knew some of it."
"You let me think Mom was dead."
"I thought I was saving you."
Ethan walked away.
Claire followed him.
He stopped near a window.
"I don't know who to trust anymore."
Claire stood beside him.
"You can trust me."
He looked at her.
"After tonight?"
"Especially after tonight."
He gave a small, exhausted laugh.
"You still haven't paid the bill."
Claire almost smiled.
"You still haven't explained why you ordered the most expensive bottle."
"I wanted to impress you."
"You succeeded."
"Then everything went wrong."
Claire looked at him.
"Maybe everything went wrong exactly when it needed to."
They returned to the others.
Evelyn had discovered another file.
Inside was the final piece of evidence.
Marcus had transferred the thirty million dollars into an offshore trust.
But the trust had one weakness.
The beneficiary could be changed.
Richard looked at Claire.
"Can you access it?"
Claire nodded.
"If we can prove Marcus forged the documents."
