Chapter 8 - THE MAN AT THE GATE
Security cameras showed Marcus stepping from a black SUV.
Two men stood behind him.
Ethan stared at the screen.
"Why is he here?"
Richard's expression became grim.
"Because he knows we've found him."
Claire looked at the screen.
Marcus appeared completely calm.
He adjusted his coat.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
It was as though he knew they were watching.
Richard picked up the phone.
"Lock the gates."
Security personnel moved immediately.
Claire whispered.
"Can he get inside?"
Richard shook his head.
"Not without permission."
A loud sound echoed outside.
Claire jumped.
The front gate had been forced open.
Ethan stepped toward the window.
Richard grabbed his arm.
"Stay here."
Security guards rushed outside.
Marcus didn't run.
He simply stood beside the damaged gate.
Then he raised one hand.
He was holding a small envelope.
Richard stared.
"What is that?"
Marcus shouted from outside.
"Your son's future."
Richard's face changed.
Marcus placed the envelope on the hood of his vehicle.
Then he drove away.
Security recovered the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Claire stared at it.
It showed Ethan standing beside Marcus six months earlier.
Behind them was a bank office.
On the back of the photograph were four words.
Ask Claire what she knows.
Ethan looked at Claire.
"What does that mean?"
Claire felt her stomach drop.
"I don't know."
Richard watched her carefully.
"Are you sure?"
Claire nodded.
"I've never met Marcus before tonight."
Ethan believed her.
But Richard didn't.
