Chapter 20 - THE END

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Claire stared at Daniel.

"My mother?"

Daniel nodded.

"She has been alive all these years."

Claire couldn't breathe.

"Why would she disappear?"

"Because she knew what was coming."

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"What is coming?"

Daniel looked toward the restaurant entrance.

An older woman entered.

She wore a simple black coat.

Claire recognized her immediately.

Her mother.

Claire stood.

"Mom?"

The woman stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

Claire walked toward her.

She didn't run.

She didn't scream.

She simply stood there, trying to understand how the impossible had become real.

Her mother reached for her hand.

"I wanted to protect you."

Claire's voice shook.

"You left me."

"I know."

"Everyone lied to me."

"I know."

Ethan approached.

Claire's mother looked at him.

"You protected my daughter."

Ethan nodded.

"I tried."

She smiled.

"Then perhaps you deserve to know the truth."

The entire mystery finally came together.

Marcus had been part of a network manipulating wealthy families for years.

Claire's father had discovered it.

Evelyn had discovered it.

Claire's mother had discovered it.

They had all disappeared or gone into hiding to protect their children.

The money had been moved into protected trusts.

The restaurant incident had been manipulated by Marcus to isolate Ethan and Claire.

But instead, it had brought them together.

Weeks later, Marcus and his accomplices were prosecuted.

Richard rebuilt his company.

Evelyn returned home.

Claire's parents slowly rebuilt their relationship with her.

And Ethan kept one promise.

He took Claire back to the restaurant.

This time, he ordered the bill himself.

When the waiter placed it on the table, Ethan smiled.

Claire raised an eyebrow.

"You're not going to make me pay, are you?"

Ethan shook his head.

"Never again."

He folded the bill and slid it toward himself.

Claire laughed.

Then Ethan reached across the table and took her hand.

"No tests."

"No secrets."

"No lies."

Claire smiled.

"Deal."

Outside, the city lights shimmered against the dark sky.

The restaurant was still the same.

But they were not.

What began with a folded napkin and an angry demand had uncovered betrayal, hidden fortunes, missing parents, and a conspiracy neither of them could have imagined.

May you like

And in the end, the bill was the easiest thing they ever had to pay.
