Chapter 13 - Eleanor's Voice

The forensic technician copied the recorder before anyone touched the play button.

Richid stood in the doorway of the hidden room while it happened.

His face had gone completely still when he saw the photographs on the walls.

"How long did he have this?"

Claire did not look at him.

"Before the wedding."

Richid closed his eyes.

"I should have stopped it."

"You keep saying that after every new thing I find."

He said nothing.

Detective Mara Ellis placed the copied audio on a clean device.

"You can listen now."

Claire sat at the desk.

Naomi had arrived ten minutes earlier with her attorney identification and waited near the door.

No one spoke when Claire pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Eleanor Hale's voice appeared.

Claire stopped breathing.

She had forgotten the exact rhythm of her mother's voice.

Soft.

Measured.

A little tired near the end of her life.

"Claire, if you are hearing this, then something I hoped would never happen has happened."

Claire's eyes filled instantly.

Richid looked away.

Eleanor continued.

"Someone has tried to use your love for this family as a weapon against you."

Claire tightened her hand around the edge of the desk.

"I need you to know three things."

There was a small pause on the recording.

"First, your father lied to me before he ever lied to you."

Richid closed his eyes.

"He took advantage of Samuel Voss when Samuel was desperate."

"He told himself it was business."

"It was not."

Claire looked at her father.

He did not defend himself.

Eleanor continued.

"Second, Samuel Voss was not innocent."

Claire frowned.

Richid looked up.

"He had been moving company funds through private accounts and hiding losses from us."

"Richid discovered it and used it to force Samuel out."

"Both men betrayed each other."

Claire leaned closer.

The story had shifted again.

Richid had exploited Samuel.

But Samuel had also endangered the company.

Eleanor's voice became firmer.

"Do not let anyone turn a complicated crime into a simple story because simple stories are easier to use against you."

Matthew had done exactly that.

So had Richid.

Both had given Claire versions that made themselves easier to forgive.

"Third, the shares in your trust do not belong to Richid, Samuel's children, or anyone else by moral inheritance."

Claire glanced at Naomi.

"They belong to you because I purchased them from the company with my own separate assets and transferred them into your trust."

Richid's head snapped up.

Naomi stared at the recorder.

Claire frowned.

That contradicted the twenty-seven-million-dollar transfer Rebecca had described.

Eleanor continued.

"There will be people who claim I funded the trust using a transfer made after my death."

Claire felt a chill.

Her mother had anticipated the exact accusation.

"That transfer is bait."

Everyone in the room went still.

"Naomi and I created a decoy trail because someone was already altering the company books."

Naomi covered her mouth.

"I did not tell Richid because I did not know whether he was responsible."

Richid whispered, "Eleanor."

The recording continued.

"The real funding documents are stored outside Hale Meridian."

"Naomi knows where to find the first key."

Claire looked at Naomi.

Naomi shook her head slowly.

"I don't."

Eleanor's voice continued.

"She may not know that she knows."

Naomi's eyes widened.

"The second key is with the person Samuel trusted most before his death."

Claire thought of Rebecca.

Or Matthew.

Eleanor paused.

"If Samuel's children come to you one day, listen to them."

"Do not surrender to them."

"They were wronged by their father, by Richid, and by circumstances that began before any of you were old enough to choose sides."

Claire felt tears on her face.

"You are not responsible for repairing every wound created by the generation before you."

The sentence landed harder than everything else.

For years Claire had tried to keep peace between people who believed conflict was a form of leadership.

Eleanor seemed to be speaking through eight years of silence directly into that weakness.

Then the recording changed.

Her mother's tone became urgent.

"There is one more thing."

Static cracked through the speaker.

"Julian knows who altered the books."

Naomi looked toward the door.

Richid's face hardened.

Claire leaned closer.

"He promised me he would tell Claire if anything happened to me."

Claire whispered, "He never did."

The recording continued.

"If he failed to keep that promise, ask why."

A long pause followed.

Then Eleanor said something none of them expected.

"And Richid, if you are listening too, this part is for you."

Richid froze.

"I know about Rebecca."

Claire turned toward her father.

His face emptied of color.

Naomi stared at him.

Claire stood slowly.

"What does that mean?"

The recording had ended.

Richid said nothing.

Claire stepped toward him.

"Dad."

His voice came out rough.

"Rebecca Lane is not only Samuel Voss's daughter."

Claire waited.

Richid looked at her with a shame deeper than anything she had seen yet.

"She's mine too."

Claire sat down slowly.

The hidden room suddenly felt too small for the history inside it.

"Did Mom forgive you?"

Richid looked at the silent recorder.

"Some days."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the only one I have."

He swallowed.

"She stayed married to me, but she stopped protecting me from myself."

Claire thought of the trust.

The decoy transfer.

The sealed recordings.

Eleanor had not left behind revenge.

She had left architecture.

A structure designed to prevent one person's version of history from becoming permanent.

"Did Rebecca ever meet Mom after she learned the truth?"

"Twice."

"And you allowed that?"

Richid gave Claire a tired look.

"Your mother did not ask my permission."

Claire almost smiled.

"Good."

Mara closed the evidence case around the recorder.

"We need to locate Rebecca before Matthew does."

Claire looked at the burner phone.

"I think she wants to be found."

Naomi shook her head.

"Rebecca has spent her entire adult life making sure people find only the version of her she chooses."

May you like

Claire looked at Richid.

"Apparently that's another family tradition."
