Chapter 5 - The Ledger That Should Not Exist

Claire did not sleep.

At 3:12 a.m., she sat at the hotel dining table with the flash drive in front of her and a cup of coffee she had not touched.

Richid stood by the window.

Neither had spoken for several minutes.

Finally Claire said the only words that mattered.

"Tell me everything."

Richid looked over his shoulder.

"You need rest."

"No."

"Claire."

"You lost the right to decide what I need when you hid my own inheritance from me."

Richid flinched.

Claire continued.

"Matthew says there is an original ledger."

"There was."

"He says it can get you arrested."

"It can."

"And Mom kept it."

Richid nodded slowly.

Claire felt anger rise through the exhaustion.

"Start talking."

Richid came to the table and sat across from her.

He folded his hands.

For years Claire had watched those hands sign contracts, shake the hands of senators, and cut ceremonial ribbons at charity hospitals.

Now they looked old.

"Hale Meridian did not begin with my money," he said.

Claire waited.

"Your mother and I had an idea, but no capital."

"So who funded you?"

"A man named Samuel Voss."

Claire went still.

Matthew's last name was Voss.

Richid watched her understand.

"Matthew's father?"

"Yes."

Claire leaned back.

"Matthew told me his father died broke."

"He did."

"Because of you?"

Richid's jaw tightened.

"Not exactly."

"That sounds like yes with better tailoring."

Richid accepted the insult.

"Samuel invested heavily in our first three acquisitions."

"For what percentage?"

"Forty-nine percent."

Claire's eyes widened.

"Half the company."

"Almost."

"Then where did his ownership go?"

Richid looked at the flash drive.

"That's where the ledger comes in."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"What did you do?"

"A recession hit."

"Dad."

"Samuel had debts unrelated to us."

"What did you do?"

Richid exhaled.

"I bought his position through an intermediary when he was desperate for liquidity."

"At a fair price?"

Richid looked away.

Claire had her answer.

"You cheated him."

"I used information I should not have had."

"That's a very expensive way of saying yes."

Richid's voice hardened.

"Samuel was going to lose everything anyway."

"So you made sure you were the person who got it."

"I protected the company."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"You and Matthew use the same sentence."

Richid went quiet.

The comparison hurt him.

Claire was glad.

"Where does Mom fit into this?"

"She found out later."

"How much later?"

"Seven years."

"And she stayed with you?"

"Barely."

Claire thought of her parents' marriage.

She had remembered quiet dinners, separate offices, polite vacations, and a strange tenderness that came and went like weather.

She had always believed adulthood had simply made them less romantic.

Now she wondered how much of her childhood had been staged for her protection.

"Mom made you create the trust."

"Yes."

"For me."

"Yes."

"Using the shares that came from Samuel Voss."

Richid looked at her.

"Most of them."

Claire stood abruptly.

"My inheritance came from the man you cheated."

"Your mother believed putting the shares beyond my control was the only way to correct part of what happened."

"Why not return them to Samuel?"

Richid's face changed.

"Because by then Samuel was dead."

Claire swallowed.

"Matthew was his heir."

"He was sixteen."

"So?"

"Samuel left debts, lawsuits, tax liens, and people circling everything he owned."

"You could have created a trust for Matthew."

Richid did not answer.

Claire stared at him.

"You chose me instead."

"Your mother did."

"And you let me marry Samuel Voss's son without telling me any of this."

Richid stood.

"I did not know who he was when you first met him."

"His last name is Voss."

"There are thousands of people named Voss."

"When did you learn?"

Richid hesitated.

Claire's voice dropped.

"When?"

"Six weeks before the wedding."

Claire stared at him.

The hotel room seemed to lose all sound.

"Six weeks."

"I investigated him."

"And?"

"His record was clean."

"You knew his father was the man you cheated."

"Yes."

"You knew I controlled shares his family once owned."

"Yes."

"And you let me walk down the aisle."

Richid looked stricken.

"You loved him."

Claire stepped back as if he had struck her too.

"That was exactly when you should have told me."

Her phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared.

This one came from an unknown number.

DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE IN THAT HOTEL.

Claire and Richid stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

MATTHEW CAN SEE THE ROOM.

Richid moved instantly.

He crossed to the windows and pulled the curtains shut.

Claire looked around the suite.

"How?"

Richid grabbed the hotel phone.

"I don't know."

The phone in Claire's hand vibrated again.

A third message.

THE CAMERA IS INSIDE THE ORCHIDS.

Claire frowned.

There were no orchids in the hotel room.

Then she remembered the apartment.

The shattered white flowers.

The arrangement Matthew had brought home that afternoon.

A gift, he had said.

An apology for an argument they had not yet had.

Claire felt sick.

She typed back.

WHO IS THIS?

The response came immediately.

SOMEONE YOUR MOTHER TRUSTED.

Claire stared at the words.

May you like

Then one final message appeared.

AND SOMEONE RICHID HOPED YOU WOULD NEVER MEET.
