Chapter 15 - The Arrest

By sunset, the Hale Meridian scandal was no longer private.
The board meeting footage had not leaked, but the existence of a forged proxy had reached regulators.
The original ledger was in police custody.
The state attorney's office requested interviews with Claire, Richid, Naomi, Rebecca, Julian, Matthew, and three directors.
Victor Sloan stopped answering his phone.
Matthew's passport was flagged pending questioning.
Julian hired a criminal defense attorney before lunch.
And at 6:20 p.m., Richid Hale was arrested in the lobby of his own company.
Claire watched from the second-floor balcony.
Two investigators approached him quietly.
There were no dramatic shouts.
No handcuffs raised above a crowd.
Richid simply listened, turned to his attorney, and surrendered his phone.
Then one investigator placed his hands behind his back.
Claire felt something inside her collapse.
She had wanted truth.
She had told herself she would accept wherever it led.
She had not imagined what it would feel like to watch the man who raised her escorted through a building with his own name carved into the marble wall.
Naomi stood beside her.
"You don't have to watch."
Claire did not look away.
"Yes, I do."
"Why?"
"Because everyone protected me by hiding things."
Claire's voice was quiet.
"I'm done looking away because reality is painful."
Richid looked up before entering the elevator.
His eyes found Claire.
For a moment, father and daughter stared at each other across the open atrium.
Richid did not ask for help.
He did not mouth an explanation.
He simply nodded once.
Claire nodded back.
Then the elevator doors closed.
The arrest was not for the thirty-year-old Voss transaction.
That case was legally complicated and possibly too old to prosecute directly.
The immediate charges involved recent obstruction, falsified corporate records, and interference with trust administration.
Evidence suggested someone had ordered Hale Meridian employees to backdate documents during the past three years.
Richid's credentials appeared on several approvals.
He denied authorizing them.
Claire believed he might be telling the truth.
She also knew belief was no longer enough.
At 7:00 p.m., the board appointed an outside restructuring executive named Helen Ward as interim chief executive.
Claire voted in favor.
Richid's allies did not.
Matthew's allies did not either.
For the first time, Claire's thirty-eight percent stood alone.
After the vote, Helen asked Claire to remain.
They sat in a smaller conference room with Naomi and the forensic audit team.
Helen was in her early sixties, with short grey hair and the calm manner of someone who had spent decades walking into companies after everyone else had panicked.
"We found something you need to see."
Claire almost laughed.
"I've heard that sentence too many times today."
Helen did not smile.
She placed three documents on the table.
"These are wire authorizations from eight years ago."
Claire recognized her mother's name.
ELEANOR HALE.
"The twenty-seven million?"
"Yes."
"My mother's recording said it was a decoy trail."
"It may have started that way."
Claire frowned.
"Started?"
Helen pointed to the first wire.
"This one is fake."
Then the second.
"This one is fake too."
Then the third.
"This one actually moved money."
Naomi leaned forward.
"From where?"
"A Hale Meridian reserve account."
"To?"
Helen slid over another page.
The beneficiary was a private company named North Vale Holdings.
Claire had never heard of it.
Naomi had.
Her face changed.
"No."
Claire looked at her.
"What?"
Naomi stared at the page.
"North Vale was Julian's company."
Claire felt anger rise.
"So Julian stole twenty-seven million dollars using my mother's identity."
Helen shook her head.
"Not exactly."
She placed a signature authorization beside the transfer.
The approval came from two accounts.
One belonged to Julian.
The second belonged to Richid.
Claire stared at it.
"Dad said he didn't authorize the records."
"His digital credentials did."
"Those can be stolen."
"Yes."
Helen looked at Naomi.
"But there is something else."
A security image appeared on the screen.
It showed the Hale Meridian executive floor eight years earlier.
The timestamp was 11:48 p.m., six months after Eleanor's death.
A man entered Richid's office using an executive keycard.
The image quality was poor.
Claire leaned closer.
At first she thought it was Richid.
The height was right.
The suit was right.
Then the man turned slightly.
Naomi inhaled sharply.
Claire felt her chest tighten.
It was Julian Cross.
He carried Eleanor's carved cane.
Claire stared at the screen.
"Why did Julian have Mom's cane?"
Naomi looked horrified.
"He shouldn't have."
"The cane stayed in our house after she died."
Naomi shook her head.
"Not for the first year."
Claire turned toward her.
"What?"
"Richid gave it to me with Eleanor's personal files."
"Then how did Julian get it?"
Naomi went silent.
Helen advanced the footage.
At 12:07 a.m., Julian left Richid's office.
The cane was no longer in his hand.
He carried a small black drive instead.
The same size as the drive Claire had found inside the cane.
Claire looked at Naomi.
"The flash drive Matthew wanted wasn't the original."
Naomi whispered.
"No."
Claire felt a new fear take shape.
"Then what was on the one I had?"
Helen's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and looked at Claire.
"The police recovered the drive from the boardroom."
Claire stood.
"Who had it?"
May you like
Helen's expression tightened.
"Your father."
