Chapter 7 - The Camera Inside the Flowers

At 6:13 a.m., Claire entered the diner alone.
Richid remained in a black sedan half a block away after Claire threatened to leave entirely if he followed her inside.
The diner smelled like coffee, butter, and bleach.
Three delivery drivers sat near the counter.
An exhausted waitress refilled sugar containers beneath harsh ceiling lights.
Claire spotted Naomi Reed in the last booth.
She was older than Claire expected.
Maybe fifty-five.
Silver streaked the dark hair pulled into a low knot at the back of her neck.
She wore a navy coat and no jewelry except a plain gold wedding band.
Her eyes went immediately to Claire's bruised cheek.
Then to the cane.
"You brought it."
Claire sat across from her.
"You knew what was inside."
Naomi nodded.
"Your mother showed me."
Claire placed both hands on the table.
"Tell me why you contacted me tonight."
"Because Matthew moved sooner than I expected."
"Expected?"
"I've been watching him for fourteen months."
Claire stared at her.
"Watching my husband?"
"Watching what he was doing inside Hale Meridian."
"Why?"
Naomi's expression tightened.
"Because your mother asked me to."
Claire felt anger flash.
"My mother has been dead eight years."
"Her instructions survived her."
Naomi removed a small tablet from her bag.
"She believed one day someone would try to force control of the company through you."
Claire looked toward the window.
Richid's sedan was visible across the street.
"She thought that person would be my father?"
"At first."
"And then?"
"Anyone."
Naomi touched the screen.
A video appeared.
The angle showed Claire's apartment living room.
The footage was from earlier that afternoon.
Matthew entered carrying the white orchid arrangement.
Claire leaned closer.
Matthew set the vase on the side table.
Then he removed something tiny from his pocket.
He pushed it deep between the orchid stems.
A pin-sized lens caught the light.
Claire's stomach turned.
"Where did you get this?"
"The camera streamed to a cloud account registered through one of Julian Cross's shell companies."
"How did you access it?"
Naomi gave her a tired look.
"I helped your mother build the security system Matthew later decided to steal."
The video continued.
Julian entered the apartment ten minutes later.
Claire's breath caught.
He had been there before the argument.
Matthew handed him a stack of papers.
Julian placed them in his briefcase.
Then Matthew said something.
The audio was faint, but clear enough.
"She'll fight the proxy."
Julian answered.
"Then make sure the fight looks mutual."
Claire's fingers went cold.
Matthew replied.
"She won't sign if she's calm."
Julian looked toward the hidden camera.
"Then don't let her stay calm."
Claire stopped the video.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
Naomi waited.
Claire finally whispered.
"They planned it."
"Yes."
"They planned the argument."
"Yes."
"Did they plan to hurt me?"
Naomi hesitated.
That hesitation was worse than an answer.
"I don't know."
Claire swallowed.
"Send this to the police."
"I already preserved copies."
"Why not send it now?"
"Because I wanted you to see the rest first."
Claire looked at her.
"There's more?"
Naomi opened another file.
This video showed Matthew seated in his office two weeks earlier.
Julian stood beside the window.
A third man sat across the desk.
Claire recognized him.
Victor Sloan, a Hale Meridian board member.
Matthew spoke first.
"Claire's vote is the only uncertainty."
Victor frowned.
"Richid controls her trust."
Matthew smiled.
"Not after the emergency clause triggers."
Julian looked uncomfortable.
"You still need her signature."
Matthew leaned back.
"I'll get it."
Victor asked how.
Matthew answered with six words that made Claire's skin crawl.
"People sign when they feel alone."
Naomi paused the video.
Claire stared at Matthew's frozen face on the screen.
"He isolated me."
Naomi nodded.
Claire remembered the past year.
Matthew had criticized her closest friend until Claire stopped inviting her over.
He had convinced Claire that Richid only called when he wanted something.
He had complained about her therapist asking intrusive questions until Claire stopped going.
He had mocked her work colleagues as people who used her family name.
One person at a time, the circle around Claire had become smaller.
She had called it marriage.
Matthew had called it strategy.
Claire looked at Naomi.
"What is the emergency clause?"
Naomi reached into her bag and placed a sealed document on the table.
"If your trustee becomes legally compromised, voting control transfers directly to you."
"Legally compromised how?"
"An indictment, a board removal, or verified concealment of material trust information."
Claire looked toward the window again.
"My father concealed the Voss partnership from me."
"Yes."
"So the clause already triggered."
Naomi nodded.
"Years ago."
Claire felt a strange wave of calm.
"Then Richid has been exercising rights he no longer had."
"Correct."
"Does he know?"
"He knows I believe that."
"That's why he fired you."
Naomi's silence confirmed it.
Claire's jaw tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me before?"
Pain crossed Naomi's face.
"I tried."
"When?"
"Three days before your wedding."
Claire stared at her.
"I never heard from you."
"I left a letter with your wedding planner."
"I never received it."
Naomi's expression hardened.
"I know."
"Who took it?"
Naomi turned the tablet around.
Another video filled the screen.
It showed the hotel service corridor outside Claire's bridal suite three days before the wedding.
Naomi handed an envelope to a staff member.
Minutes later, Matthew appeared.
He took the envelope.
He opened it.
He read it.
Then he put it inside his jacket.
Claire felt the last trace of uncertainty disappear.
Matthew had not discovered the truth after marrying her.
He had known before the wedding.
He married her anyway.
Naomi slid the sealed trust document toward Claire.
"Your mother gave you one instruction."
Claire looked down.
"What was it?"
Naomi's eyes held hers.
"If two powerful men ever tell you the only safe choice is to trust one of them, trust neither."
Claire's phone vibrated.
A calendar notification appeared.
HALE MERIDIAN BOARD MEETING - 8:00 A.M.
Naomi glanced at the time.
6:47.
"What are you going to do?"
Claire stood and picked up the cane.
"I'm going to the meeting."
Naomi frowned.
"Matthew expects you to hide."
May you like
Claire looked at the bruise reflected faintly in the dark window.
"That's exactly why I'm going."
