Chapter 3 - The Cane and the Contract

Richid did not wait for permission.
The apartment door opened hard enough to strike the wall.
He entered with two building security officers behind him.
His grey suit was still perfectly buttoned, but his white hair was disordered from the rush across town.
Then he saw Claire.
Everything else disappeared from his face.
"Claire."
He crossed the room and knelt beside her.
Claire had spent most of her life believing her father could not be frightened.
Now his hands shook when he touched her shoulder.
"Look at me."
"I'm okay."
"No, you're not."
His eyes moved to the bruise on her cheek.
Then to Matthew.
Richid stood.
The room became very quiet.
Matthew held his ground.
"Don't make this worse."
Richid walked toward him.
Julian stepped between them.
"Richid."
"Move."
"You don't want to do this."
"Move away from him, Julian."
Julian looked at the security officers.
Neither moved.
They worked for the building, not Richid.
Matthew noticed that too.
His confidence returned by degrees.
"You came here looking for a fight," Matthew said.
Richid's eyes stayed fixed on him.
"I came here because my daughter called me from the floor."
Matthew adjusted his cuff.
"She fell."
Claire's voice cut across the room.
"He shoved me."
Matthew looked at her.
"You were angry."
"I remember what happened."
"Do you?"
Claire felt the insult more deeply than she expected.
It was not enough for him to hurt her.
He needed to rewrite the moment while she was still sitting among the evidence.
Richid stepped toward Claire again.
"We're leaving."
Matthew's voice sharpened.
"She is not taking company property."
Everyone looked at the flash drive.
Claire closed her fist around it.
"This belonged to my mother."
"The data on it belongs to Hale Meridian."
Richid gave Matthew a cold smile.
"Interesting that you know what's on it."
Matthew did not respond.
Richid turned to Julian.
"You told him."
Julian's face tightened.
"I did what I had to do."
"For whom?"
"For the company."
Richid laughed once.
"You stopped caring about the company the day you started taking private checks from my son-in-law."
Claire looked at Julian.
"You were working for Matthew before you resigned?"
Julian hesitated.
That was enough.
Claire's stomach twisted.
Richid took her arm gently.
"We're going."
Matthew lifted the white envelope.
"Not until she signs this."
Richid stared at it.
"What is that?"
"A settlement."
"For an event that hadn't happened when it was drafted?"
Matthew's expression remained controlled.
"For a marriage that has been unstable for months."
Claire turned toward him.
"You told me this morning that you loved me."
Matthew looked almost bored.
"People say things to get through breakfast."
The cruelty was so casual that Claire felt something inside her finally break free.
Not her heart.
Her fear.
She stood straighter.
"What's in the settlement?"
"Claire," Richid said.
"No."
She looked at her father.
"I want to hear him say it."
Matthew opened the envelope and removed the documents.
"You relinquish your voting rights in Hale Meridian during the separation."
Claire stared at him.
"My voting rights?"
"Temporarily."
"To you?"
"To a marital proxy."
Richid stepped forward.
"Absolutely not."
Claire looked at him.
"Why are you so afraid of that?"
Richid stopped.
Matthew saw the question land.
He smiled.
"Because your father has a board vote tomorrow morning."
Claire turned toward Richid.
"What board vote?"
Richid said nothing.
Matthew continued.
"A confidence vote."
"On what?"
"On whether he remains chief executive."
Claire's eyes widened.
"You never told me."
Richid's face hardened.
"Because you had enough going on."
"That isn't an answer."
Matthew handed the documents to Claire.
"Your shares decide the vote."
Claire looked at the first page.
The dense legal language blurred for a moment.
Then she saw the percentage.
Thirty-eight percent.
Her name.
Her shares.
She had always been told she owned twelve percent.
Claire looked up slowly.
"Why does this say I own thirty-eight percent of Hale Meridian?"
No one spoke.
Her father looked at Julian.
Julian looked at the floor.
Matthew watched Claire with the expression of a man who had finally reached the part of the evening he had planned.
Claire's voice dropped.
"Dad."
Richid closed his eyes briefly.
"Your mother changed the trust before she died."
Claire stared at him.
"You told me she left everything to you."
"I told you I controlled the estate."
"That's not the same thing."
"No."
Claire's chest tightened.
"You lied to me."
Richid looked at her.
"I protected you."
Matthew laughed softly.
"There it is."
Richid ignored him.
"Your mother transferred additional shares into a private trust with you as beneficiary."
"And you were trustee."
"Until your thirty-fifth birthday."
Claire blinked.
"I'm thirty."
"There are emergency clauses."
Matthew lifted his chin toward the flash drive.
"Which are probably on that."
Claire looked down at the small black device.
Her mother's cane had held the truth about her inheritance for years.
Her father had hidden that truth.
Her husband had prepared papers to capture it.
And she had walked through her own life without knowing either fact.
"Why tomorrow?" Claire asked.
Richid frowned.
"What?"
"Why is the board vote tomorrow?"
Matthew answered.
"Because an anonymous whistleblower delivered evidence of fraud to the directors yesterday."
Claire looked at her father.
"Fraud by you?"
Richid's jaw tightened.
"Fabricated evidence."
Matthew smiled.
"That's what guilty men always say."
Richid turned on him.
"You built this."
"Prove it."
Claire held up the flash drive.
"Maybe Mom already did."
For the first time, Julian looked genuinely alarmed.
He stepped forward.
"Claire, please don't plug that into anything connected to the internet."
She stared at him.
"Why?"
Julian's voice became urgent.
"Because if it's the drive I think it is, opening it will trigger a release."
"A release of what?"
Julian swallowed.
"Everything."
The room went silent.
Claire looked at her father.
"Did you know that?"
Richid's expression answered before his mouth did.
"Your mother designed a dead-man protocol."
Claire almost whispered the next question.
"Who was she afraid of?"
Richid looked at Matthew.
Then at Julian.
May you like
Then back at Claire.
"All of us."
