Chapter 6: Vanessa’s Betrayal

Chapter 6: Vanessa’s Betrayal
If Adrian was breaking, Vanessa was entirely shattered. The reality of federal prison had finally breached her delusion of invincibility. During the pre-trial hearings, her defense attorney requested a closed-door meeting with the prosecution, which I was allowed to observe from behind a two-way mirror.
Vanessa looked ragged. Her signature blonde hair was unkempt, the roots showing a dull brown. The designer clothes had been replaced by a drab uniform.
"I'll give you everything on him," Vanessa pleaded with the federal prosecutor, her voice shrill with desperation. "Adrian forced me to do it. He told me if I didn't play along, he'd hurt me too. I was terrified of him!"
Behind the glass, I watched her lie with the exact same ease she had used to accuse me of rolling my eyes.
The prosecutor, a sharp, no-nonsense woman, simply opened her laptop. She played the audio clip.
“Again,” she said with a satisfied smile. “She rolled her eyes at me.”

"Ms. Caldwell," the prosecutor said dryly, pausing the audio. "Does this sound like a woman fearing for her life? Or does it sound like a co-conspirator enjoying a glass of vintage champagne while directing the torture of an innocent woman?"
Vanessa’s mouth opened and closed like a suffocating fish. She had nothing left. The prosecution informed her that there would be no plea bargain. They were going for the maximum sentence on all counts: aggravated assault, kidnapping, extortion, and wire fraud.
